KLAMATH'S For iU development and pros-
GREATEST pcrity tho Klamath Basin must have
NEED people, and the right kind of peoplt
at that. Its great need is intelli
gent, practical fanners, who understand tho meaning
of intensified and diversified fanning; men who will
buy land, not for speculative purposes, but with the
idea of clearing off tho sagebrush and making per
manent and cemfortablo homes. Such men are bound
to succeed. There is room for thousands of them.
Developing Sugar hepts have been grown ex-
Various perimentnlly throughout tho Klam-
Industries nth Valley. Thu percentngu of Migur
is high, ns will be .noted from the
following analysis nimle hy thu United States De
partment of Agriculture from beets grown near
hiigar in heels, per cent., 21.7; sugar in juice, per
eeiit., 21 1 j ooeflieient of purity, 83.1.
Kxperivnco has demonstrated that excellent as
paragus, onions and celery can bu grown, the lulu
liiuils being very .similar to those of the Sacramento
and San .loaiiiiu Valleys of California, where mich
vegetables are so successfully cultivated. Through
out thu world the reclaimed marshlands are thu best
suited for the highest development of dairy inter-
estH.
There is no question that this will become a sugar
beet producing section and that n number of facto
ries will be built and operated with thu development
of the industry.
All kinds of fruit adapted to the temperate rone
thrive here apples, peaches, pears, cherries, prunes,
plums, apricots and nectarines ilo well, and small
fruits bear abundantly nnd of excellent quality.
Tlirc are a great many small orchards throughout
the basin that prove the adaptability of thu region
to the profitable production of fruit.
K. L. Smith, former president of the Oregon Stato
Hoard of Horticulture, gives it as his opinion that
the foothill lands are specially adapted to apple
growing.
Cultivation of the potato has passed beyond the
experimental stage, the sandy loam of thu uplands
producing them in great nbuudauce.
Klamath County wheat, grown without irrigation,
took tho premium at the New Orleans Exposition.
Tho most important forage crop is alfalfa, tho soil
being peculiarly adapted to its growth.
Excess All landowners being required
Holdings Must (o sell their excess holdings, there
Be Sold Is n large area of good land for sale
at reasonable figures, prices rang
ing from about $15 to $35 for unimproved, and $20
la $50 per acre tor improved land. Land adjacent
(o tho principal towns commauda hiuher prices. The
purchaser pays for the water right at a cost of about
$18 per aero to bo paid for in ten equal annual in
stallments without interest. This amounts to less
than tho ordinary annual rental paid private ditch
companies. Some of the irrigators of Klamath Val
ley (and they are tho most prosperous farmers) have
already paid out to such companies for water $00 per
aero and rwn no water. All of these companies havo
been purchased by the Government and included in
tho system.
No public lands will bo open for settlement, for
several years.
Climate The upland soil is mainly a rich sandy
and loam of great unifo.-mlty and composed
Soil largely of disintegrated and eroded lava
with an ndmixturo of volcanic ush and
diatotuaccous earth, the .latter material of plant ori
gin, formed in the bottom of tho ancient sea which
rovcred tho greater part of tho Great Basin, nnd of
which Klamath Valley is n northwesterly extension.
Such soil, characteristic of many of the richest agri
cultural sections of the world, including much of
Italy and the great plains of India, is extromely fer
tile, and of lasting productiveness. The lako and
ttilo lands are made up of a volcanic soil containing
much organic matter, a vegetablo accumulation of
ages, nnd is of a pentty nature?
The climate is oxtremoly healthful and not severe.
There is rarely any Winter weather before tho latter
part of December, and but little eero weather during
the entire Winter. The annual procipitation is about
fifteen inches, with little rain during tho Summer
months. t
