The
Klamath
Projeot
Tliu Klamath 1'rojvut is tho nuuie
that linn becu applied to tho reclama
tion of about 100,000 acres ol land now
nnuvr tho overflow of tho Klamatli
lliver nnii of Lower Klamatli Jtitlto and Title lils
mill llin iiTitfiition of about lliO.000 acres of valley
Imul adjacent to the Klamath Itivcr, along the conrso
of liONt Itivcr and the tributary portion of tho great
plateau lyiiiK chiefly in Klamath County, Oregon, but
ii Uo c-mhraciiifr a part of Biskiyou and Modoo Coun
ties, California, a total area of 200,000 ucteB.
The Project embraces tho construction of a very
Krent mileuKO of canals, laterals and drainage canals
and will havo its principal source in Upper Klamath
Lake. Clear Laku and Horsefly aro reservoir sites
whero flood water will ha impounded and utilized for
irrigation of land included in the upper portion of
the Project.
Work on the main canal was started in the Spring
of liiOO uud the first unit of nine miles is now com
pleted. About 13,000 acres of land will bo irrigated
from the first unit, the laterals for which aro being
t'liimtrtictcd under tho supervision of tho engineers
having charge of the Project, liy far tho largest
proportion of the laml under the first unit is now in
sagebrush and must be cleared and broken in time
for croiis in Uie Upriug of 190H- Work on the sec
ond unit is being done by the Government and em
braces nineteen miles of main canal and twenty-six
milcH of laterals to furnish water to about 20,000
additional acres of laud. Work on this unit will be
prosecuted as rapidly ns possible.
Nearly one-half of the area to be irrigated is now
under water lo n depth of from one to fifteen feet
anil will be reclaimed by a system of drainage to
lower the level of the rivers and lakes. A large part
of the swamp land and practically all of the valley
land in tho Klamath Basin are held in private own
ership and somo in very large tracts which must b4
sold in tracts of 1G0 acres or less under tho regula
tions governing tho perfection of a water-right.
KLAMATH'S For its development and pros-
UREATE8T perity tho Klamath Basin must have
NEED people, and the right kind of people
at that. IU great need is intelli
gent, practical farmers, who understand the meaning
of intensified and diversified farming; men who will
buy land, not for speculative purposes, but with the
idea of clearing off the sagebrush and making per
manent and comfortable homes. Such men ore bound
to succeed. There is room for thousands of them. -
Developing Stignr beets have been grown ex-
Various perimentally throughout the Klam-
Industries ath Valley. Tho percentage of sugar
is high, as will be noted from the
following analysis made by tho United States De
partment of Agriculture from beets grown near
sugar in beets, per cent., 21.7; sugar in juice, per
rent., 21.1 j poefllcient of purity, 63.1.
Kperieuee has demonstrated that excellent as
paragon, onions and celery can bo grown, the lulu
IiiiiiU being very similar to those of tho Sacramento
mid San .Joaquin Valleys of California, where such
vegetables are so successfully cultivated. Through
out tho world the reclaimed marshlands aro the best
suited for tho highest development of dairy inter
ests. There is no question that this will become a sugar
beet producing section and that a number of facto
ries will be built and operated with the development
of tho industry.
All kinds of fruit adapted to tho temperate zone
thrive here apples, peaches, pears, cherries, prunes,
plums, apricots and nectarines do well, and small
fruits bear obundantly and of excellent quality.
There aro a great many small orchards throughout
the basin that prove the adaptability of the region
to the profitable production of fruit.
E. h. Smith, former president of tho Oregon State
Hoard of Horticulture, gives it as his opinion that
tho foothill lands arc specially adapted to apple
growing.
Cultivation of the potato has passed boyond the
experimental stage, the sandy loam of tho uplands
producing them in great abundance.
Klamath County wheat, grown without irrigation,
took tho premium at the New Orleans Exposition.
The most important forage crop is alfalfa, the soil
being peculiarly adapted to its growth.
Exoess All landowncDs being required
Holdings Must (o sell their excess holdings, there
Be Sold is a large area of good land for sale
at reasonablo figures, prices rang
ing from about $15 to $35 for unimproved, and $20
to $50 per acre tor improved land. Land adjacent
to the principal towns commands hiaher prices. The
purchaser pays for the water right at a cost of about
$18 per acre to be paid for in ten ,equal annual in
stallments without interest. This amounts to leas
than the ordinary annual rental paid private ditch
companies. Some of tho irrigators of Klamath Val
ley (and they are tho most prosperous farmers) have
already paid out to such companies for water $C0 per
acre and own no water. All of these companies havo
been purchased by the Oovcrnmcnt and included in
the system.
No publio lands will bo open for settlement for
several years.
Climate Tho upland soil is mainly a rich sandy
and loam of great uniformity and composed
Soil largely of disintegrated and eroded lava
with an admixture of volcanic ash and
diatomaceous earth, the latter material of plant ori
gin, formed iu the bottom of tho ancient sea which
covered the greater part of the (Ircat Basin, uud of
which Klamath Valley la a northwesterly oxtensiou.

cultural sections of tho world, Including much of
Italy and the great plains of India, is extremely fer
tile, and of luting productiveness. Tho lako and
tulo lands are made up of a voloanio soil containing
inuoh organic matter, a vegetablo accumulation of
nges, and is of a pentty nature.
The climate is extremely healthful and not severe.
There is rarely, any Wiuter weather before the latter
