Tliu Kluiimth Project is the name

of li'iMt Itiver and tho tributary portion of tho great
plateau lyiiiK chiefly in Klamath County, Oregon, but
itlno embracing a part of ftinkiyou nnd Modoo Coun
tliu, California, a total orca of 200,000 ncrcH.
Tliu l'roject cmbracea tho conutructiou of a very

irrigation of land included in the upper portion of
tlio l'roject.
Work on the main canal wai xtartcd in the Spring
nf VMti and the first unit of nine milea is now com
l.lele.l. About 13,000 acres of land will bo irrigated
from the first unit, tho laterals for which arc being
eoiiNtructcd under tho superviaion of the engineers
having charge of tho Project. l)y far the largest
proportion of the land under the first unit is now in
Mtgcbrush and ntuat be cleared and broken in time
for crops in the Spring of 1908- Work on the sec
nnd unit is being ilonu by the Government nnd cm
bruees nineteen miles of main canal and twenty-six
mik-s of laterals to furtii.li water to about 20,000
ii.l.litionul acres of laud. Work on this unit will be
pr.iNeetited as rapidly us possible.
Nearly one-half of the area to bo irrigated is now
under water to a depth of from one to fifteen feet
nnd will be reclaimed by a syiitcm of drainage to
lower the level of the rivers and lakes. A large pari
of the Hwnmp land and practically all of the vallny
land in tho Klamath Unsin are held in private own
ership and somo in very large tracts which must b
sold in tracts of lo'O acres or linn under the regula
tions governing the perfection of a water-right.
KLAMATH'S For its development and pros-
GREATEST pcrity the Klamath Basin muit have
NEED people, and the right kind of people
at that. IU great need ii intelli
gent, practical farmers, who understand the meaning
of intensified and di versified farming; men who will
buy land, not for speculative purposes, but with the
idea of clearing off the sagebrush and making per
raanent and cemfortablo homes. Such men are bound
to succeed. There is room for thousands of them.
Developing .Sugar beets have been grown ex-
Various perimcntally throughout the KInm-
Industries nth Valley. The percentage of sugar
is high, as will be noted from the
following ntialysi made by the United States De
partment of Agriculturo from beets grown near
sugar in beets, per cent., 21.7; sugar in juice, per
rent., 21.1 ; coefficient of purity, 83.1.
Kxpcricnpe has demonstrated that excellent as
paragtiN, onions and celery can be grown, the tulo
lands being very similar to those of the Sacramento
nml San .lonipiiu Vnllcys of California, where such
vegetables are so successfully cultivated. Through
out the world the reclaimed marshlands arc tho best
united for the highest development of dairy inter
cuts. There is no question that this will become a augnr
beet producing section and that a number of facto
ries will be built and operated with the development
of tho industry.
All kinds of fruit ndapted to the temperate zone
thrive here apples, peaches, pears, cherries, prunes,
plums, apricots and nectarines do well, and small
fruits bear abundantly and of excellent quality.
There arc a great many small orchards throughout
the basin that prove the adaptability of the region
to the profitable production of fruit.
K. L. Smith, former president of the Oregon Stnto
Hoard of Horticulture, gives it as his opinion that
the foothill lands are specially adapted to apple
growing.
Cultivation of the potato has passed beyond the
experimental stage, the sandy loam of the uplands
producing them in great abundance
Klamath County wheat, grown without irrigation,
took tho premium nt tho New Orleans Exposition.
Tho most important forage crop is alfalfa, the toil
being peculiarly adapted to its growth.
Exoeea All landowners being required
Holding! Must to acll their excess holdings, there
Be Sold is a large area of good land for sale
at reasonable figures, prices rang
ing from about $15 to $35 for unimproved; and $20
to $50 per acre tor improved land. Land adjacent
to the principal towns commands bislier prices. Tho
purchaser pays for the water right at a cost of about
$18 per acre to be paid for in ten equal anuual in
stallments without interest. This amounts to less
than the ordinary annual rental paid private ditch
companies. Some of tho irrigators of Klamath Val
ley (and they aro tho most prosperous farmers) have
already paid out to such companies for water $G0 per
acre and rwn no water. All of these companies havo
been purchased by the Government and Included in
tho system.
No public lands will bo open for settlement for
sovcral years.
Climate The upland soil is mainly a rich sandy
and loam of great uniformity and composed
Soil largely of disintegrated aud eroded lava
with an admixture of volcanic ush and
diatomaceoue earth, tho latter material of plant ori
gin, formed in the bottom of tho ancient sea which
covered the greater part of the Great Basin, and of
which Klamath Valley is a northwesterly extension.
Such soil, characteristic of many of the richest agri
cultural Motions of tho, world, including much of
Italy and the great plains of India, is extremely fer
tile, and of lasting productiveness. The lake and
tule lands are made up of a volcanic soil containing
much organio matter, a vegetable-accumulation oi
ages, and it of a pettty uature.
The elimate is extremely healthful aud not severe.
There is rarely any Winter weather before the latter
part of Deeember, aud but little cero weather duriug
the entire Winter. The annual precipitation is about
fifteen inches, with little raiu during the Summer
months.
