" FACTS ABOUT KLAMATH PROJECT e Tho Klamath Project is tho name Klamath Unit has been applied to tho rcclatnn Project tlon of about 100,000 ncrca of Innd now under tho overflow of tho Klamath Hivcr mid of Lower Klamath Luko and Tulo liake ninl tlm iiriKiition of about H-0,000 acrcH of valley hind adjacent to the Klamath Kiver, nloni: tho courao of Lout Kivcr and tho tributary portion of the great plateau lyjiiit chiefly in Klamath County, Oregon, but iiIko embrncifiK a part of Siskiyou and Alodoo Coun lien, California, a total area of 200,000 acrcH. The Project eiubnicci tho conatructiou of a very Krent mileiiKo of canala, laterals and draiuaKC canals mid will have iU principal hource in Upper Klamath Luke. Cleur Luke und lioraelly are reservoir aitca where Hood wateMvill he impounded and utilized for irrigation of laud included hi tho upper portion of tho Project. Work on tho main canal was started in the Spring of lUOo' and the Unit unit of nine milea in now com pleted. About 13,000 acre of land will bo irrigated from the llmt unit, tho laterals for which fire beitiK eoiiHlritcted under tbo supervision of tho engineers having charge of the Project. Hy far tho largest proportion of tho land under tho first unit is now in Niigebrtuh and must bo cleared and broken in time for crops in the Spring of 11)08- Work on tho sec ond unit is being done by the Government and em braces nineteen miles of main cnnnl nnd twenty-sis mill's of laterals to furnish water to about 20,000 additional acres of laud. Work on this unit will be prosecuted as rapidly us possible. Nearly one-half of tho area to be irrigated is now under water to a depth of from one to fifteen feet and will be reclaimed by a system of drainage to lower tho level of the rivers and lakes. A largo part of the swamp land and practically all of the valley land in tho Klamath liasin are held in private own ership and some in very large tracts which must b sold in tracts of 1G0 acres or less under the regula tions governing tho perfection of a water-right. KLAMATH'S For its development and proa OREATEST perity the Klamath Basin must have NEED people, and the right kind of people at that. Its great need is intelli gent, practical farmers, who understand the meaning of intensified and diversified farming; men who will buy land, not for speculative purposes, but with the idea of clearing off the sagebrush and making per manent and cemfortablo homes. Such men are bound to succeed. There ie room for thousands of them. Developing Sugar beets Imve been grown ex Various pcrimentclly throughout the Kliim- Industries nth Valley. The percentage of sugar is high, as will be noted from the following nnnlysis miidc by the United States Do p.'iitmcnt of Agriculture from beets grown near wignr in beets, per cent., 21.7; sugar in juice, per cent., 21.1 ; coefficient of purity, 83.1. Kxperieiicc has demonstrated that excellent as pnragiiM, onions and celery can be grown, the title IniitlH being very similar to thoso of the Sacramento nnd Snn .loiuiuin Valleys of California, where such vegetables arc so successfully cultivated. Through out the world the reclaimed marshlands arc the best suited for the highest development of dairy inter est. There is no question thnt this will become n sugar beet producing section and thnt n uum'ier of facto ries will be built and operated with tho development of tho industry. All kinds of fruit adapted to tho temperate 7.0110 thrive here apples, peaches, pears, cherries, prunes, plums, npricots nnd nectarines do well, and small fruits bear abundantly and of excellent quality. There are n great many small orchards throughout the bnsin thnt prove the adaptability of the region to the profitable production of fruit. K. L. Smith, former president of the Oregon State Hoard of Horticulture, gives it as his opinion that the foothill lands arc specially adapted to applo growing. Cultivation of the potato has passed beyond the experimental stage, the sandy loam of the uplands producing them in great abundance. Klamath County wheat, grown without irrigation, took tho premium at tho Now Orleana Exposition. Tho most important forago crop is alfalfa, tho soil being peculiarly adapted to its growth. Exoeu All landowners being required Holdings Must to sell their excess holdings, thcro Be Bold is a large area ot good laud for sale at rcasonablo figures, prices rang ing from about $15 to $35 for unimproved, and $20 to $50 per acre tor improved land. Land .adjacent to the principal towns commands burner prices. The purchaser pays for the wator right nt a cost of about $18 per acre to be paid for in ten equal annual in stallments without interest. This amounts to less than the ordinary annual rental paid private ditch companies. Some of the irrigators of Klamath Val ley (and they are tho most prosperous farmers) have already paid out to such companies for watf r $J0 per acre and rwn no water. All of these companies havo been purchased by the Government and included in the system. v No publio lands will be open for settlement for ovoral yean. OUmaM The upland soil is mainly a rich sandy and loam of groat uniformity and composed Boll largely of disintegrated and eroded lava with an admixture of volcanio ash and diutomaceous earth, the latter material of plant ori gin, formed in the bottom of tho ancient sea which covered the greater part of tho Great Basin, nnd of whloh Klamath Valley is a northwesterly extension. Suoh soil, characteristic of many of tho richest agri cultural seotions of tho world, including much of Italy and the great plains of India, is extremely fer tile, andof lasting productiveness. Tho lako and title lands are made up of a volcanio soil containing mueh organio matter, a vegetable accumulation of agca, and is of a peatty nature. The ollmate is extremely healthful and not severe. Thero is rarely any Winter weather before tho latter part of December, and but little coro weather during the entire Winter. Tho annual precipitation is about fifteen inches, with, littlo rain during the Summer moBtlu. BUY According to Season Groceries, the same as wearing apparel, should be bought according to seasons.
