Work on tho main earml waa atarted in the Spring
of I !)()() and tho llrnt unit of nine mil en is now com
pleted. About 111,000 iinren or land will bo irriuntcd

prosecuted 11 h rapidly nn iiossible.
Nearly oiiC'linlf of the area to bo irrigated is now
under waler to a depth or from one to fifteen feet
and will be reclaimed by it Hyxtem of drainage to
lower the level of the rivers nntl lakes. A large part
of the Hwamp laud and practically nil or the valley
land in tho Klamath llasm aro held in private own
ershijt and sonic in very large tracts which nitisL bi
Kohl in tracts or 100 ncren or lesi tinder tho regula
tions governing the perfection of a water-right.
KLAMATH '8 For its development and proi-
GUUATE8T pcrity the Klamath Basin must uav
NEHD people, ami tho right kind of pcopla
at that. Its great need is intelli
gent, practical fanners, who understand tho meaning
of intensified and diversified fanning; men who will
buy land, not for speculative purposes, but with the
idea of clearing ou the sagebrush and making per
manent and comfortablo homes. Such men nro bound
to succeed. There is room for thousands of them.
Developing Sugar beets have been grown ex-
Various periiiienlnlly throughout tho Klam-
Industries ath Valley. The percentage or sugar
is high, as will bo noted from the
riillowiiig analysis made by tho United States De
partment of Agriculture from beets grown near
sugar in beets, per cent., 121.7; sugar in juice, per
cent.. 1M.1 ; eoeilleieiit of purity, 83.1.
Kporii'iiec 1ms demonstrated that excellent as
paragus, minus and celery can bo grown, the tulc
lauds being ery similar to those of the Sacramento
ami San .ltiaiuiu Valleys of California, where such
vegetables are so Micecssfully cultivated. Through
out the world the reclaimed uinrhhlauds are tho best
milted for the highest development or dairy inter
ests. There is no question that this will become n sugar
beet producing section and that a num'ier or facto
ries will bo built and operated with the development
or the industry.
All Kinds or fruit adapted to the temperate zone
thrive hero apples, peaches, pears, cherries, prunes,
plums, apricots and nectarines do well, and small
I rn its bear abundantly and of excellent quality.
There arc a great many small orchards throughout
the basin that prove the adaptability of the region
to the prolltablo production of fruit.
K. It. Smith, former president or tho Oregon State
Board or Horticulture, gives it as his opinion that
the foothill lands nro specially adapted to tipple
growing.
Cultivation of the potato has passed beyond the
experimental stage, the sandy loam of the uplands
producing them m great abundance.
Klamath County wheat, grown without irrigation,
took tho premium at the New Orleans Exposition.
Tho most important forage crop is alfalfa, tho soil .
being peculiarly ndapted to its growth.
Excess All landowners being required
Holdings Must to sell their excess holdings, thcro
Bo Sold is a largo area ol good laud lor sale
at reasonable tigures, prices raug
ing from nbout $15 to .Ij for unimproved, and $20
to $!0 per aero lor improved laud. Laud adjacent
to the jinucipnl towns commands liiuhcr prices. The
purohnhor pays for tho water right nt n cost of nbout
if 18 per aero to bo paid for in ten equal annual in
stallments without interest. This amounts to less
than the ordinary annual rental paid private ditch
companies. Some of tho irrigators of Klamnth Vnl
ley (and they nro tho most prosperous farmers) have
already paid out to such companies for wnter $C0 per
ncro mid wu no wntcr. All of theso companies have
been purchased by tho Government nnd included in
the system.
No public lands will bo open for settlement for
several years.
Olimato Tho upland soil is mainly n rich sandy
and loam of great uniformity nnd composed
Soil largely of disintegrated and eroded lnvn
with nn iidmixturoof volcnuio nsh and
diatomnccous earth, tho latter material of plant ori
gin, formed in tho bottom of tho ancient sen which
covered tho greater part of tho Great Bnsin, nnd of
which Klamath Valley is 11 northwesterly extension.
Such soil, characteristic, of many of tho richest agri
cultural sections of the world, including much of
Itnly nnd tho grent plains of India, is extremely (fer
tile, and of lasting productiveness. The lake and
title lands nro nindo up of a volcanic soil containing
much orgnnio matter, n vegotnblo accumulation of
nges, nnd is of n pentty nature.
Tho clitnato is extremely healthful and not severe.
Thcro is rnroly nny Winter wonther beforo tho luttcr
pnrt of December, nnd but littlo r.ero weather during
tho cntlro Winter. Tho annual precipitation is about
fifteen inches, with littlo rain during tho Summer
months.
