wheru Hood water will be impounded and utilized for
irrigation of land included in the upper portion of
(bo l'roject.
Work on tbe main canal wan atarted in the Spring
of IDOi; and tbu firnt unit of mm: milch- i now com
pleted. About 13,000 ncrea of land will bo irrigated
from the llrat unit, tbu laterala for which aro being
eiimitriieted under tbu HtiperviHiou of tbu engineers
having charge of tbu Project. Ily far tbe largcit
proportion of tbu land under tbu firnt unit is now in
migebruHbaud miiNt bu cleared and broken in time
for crops in the Sprint,- of 1008- Work on the sec
ond unit is being done by tbu (jovcrnmcut and cm-
braces nineteen miles of main canal and twenty-six
miles of laterals to furnish water to about 20,000
additional acres of bind. Work on this unit will be
prosecuted as rnpidly ns possible.
Nearly one-half of tbe area to bo irrigated is now
iinilcr water lo a depth of from one to fifteen feet
ami will bu reclaimed by a system of drainage to
lower thu level of the rivers nnd lakes. A large part
of tbe swamp laml ami practically nil of tbe valley
laud in tbu Klamath llnsiu arc held in private own
ership mid some in very large tracts which must be
sold in tracts of 1C0 acres or less under tho regula
tion governing thu perfection of a water-right.
KLAMATH'S For its development and pros-
aiUJATLST pcrity tbu Klamath Basin must have
NEED people, and tbo right kind of people
at that. Its great need is intelli
gent, practical farmers, who understand tho meaning
of intensified and diversified fanning; men who will
buy land, not for speculative purposes, but with the
idea of clearing off tbo sagebrush and making per
manent and cemfortablo homes. Such men are bound
to succeed. Thero is room for thousands of them.
Developing Sugar beets have been grown ex-
Various pcrimcutally throughout tbo Klam-
Industries ath Valley. The percentage of sugar
is high, as will be noted from tbe
follow im; analysis madu by tbo United States De
partment of Agriculture from beets grown neor
sugar in beets, per cent., 21.7; sugar in juice, per
cent., 'J 1.1 i coelllcient of purity, 3.1.
.Experience has demonstrated that excellent as
paragus, oniJits nnd celery can be grown, tbo tulc
lands being very similar to those of the Sacramento
mid San .lo;uiiin Valleys of California, wheru such
vegetables are so successfully cultivated. Through
out thu worhl tbe reclaimed marshlands arc the best
suited for tbo highest development of dairy inter
ests. Thero is no question that this will become a sugar
beet producing section mid that n number of facto
ries will be built and operated with the development
of tbe industry.
All kinds of fruit adapted to tbe temperate zone
thrive here apples, punches, pears, cherries, primes,
plums, npricots and nectarines do well, and small
fruits bear abundantly unit of excellent quality.
There are a great many small orchards throughout
the basin that prove the adaptability of tbe region
to tbe profitable production of fruit.
K. i. Smith, former president of the Oregon Stato
Hoard of Horticulture, gives it as his opinion tbat
the foothill lands are specially adapted to apple
growing.
Cultivation of the potato has passed beyond the
experimental stage, the sandy loam of tbo uplands
producing them in great abundance.
Klamatb County wheat, grown without irrigation,
took tbo premium at the Now Orleans Exposition.
Tbo most important forage crop is alfalfa, tho soil
being peculiarly adapted to its growth.
Excess All landowners being required
Holdings Must to sell their excess holdings, there
Be Sold is a mrgu area ot good land for sale
at reasonable ligures, prices rang
ing from about $15 to $;I5 for unimproved, and $20
to $.r0 per acre lor improved laud. Land adjacent
to trie principal towns commands hitrhor prices. The
purchaser pays for tho water right at n cost of about
$18 per acre to be paid for in ten equal annual in
stallments without interest. This amounts to less
'than the ordinary annual rental paid private ditch
companies. Some of tho irrigators of Klamath Val
ley (and thoy aro the most prosperous farmers) have
already paid out to such companies for water $G0 per
aero and rwn no water. All of these companies havo
been purchased by the Government and included in
tho system. -
No publio lands will be open for settlement for
several years.
OllmaU Tho upland soil is mainly a rich sandy
and loam of great uniformity and composed
loll largely of disintegrated and eroded lava
with an admixture of volcanic ash ami
diatomaceous earth, tho latter material of plant ori
giu, formed in tho bottom of tbe ancient sea which
covered the greater part of tho Great Basin, und of
which Klamath Vulley is a northwesterly extension.
Such soil, characteristic of many of tho richest agri
cultural sections of tho world, including much of
Italy oud the great plains of India, is extremely fer
tile, and of lasting productiveness. The lake and
tule lands aro mado up of a volcanic soil containing
much organio matter, a vegctablo accumulation of
ages, and is of a peatty nature.
The climate is extremely healthful and not severe.
Thore is rarely any Winter weather beforo tho latter
part of December, and but littlo eero weather during
tho entire Winter. Tho annual prooipitation is about
fifteen inches, with littlo raiu during the Summer'
months.
