sold in tracts of 1C0 acres or less under the regula

KLAMATH '0 For its development and proa-
OKEATEBT perity the Klamath Basin must have
NEED pcoplo, and the right kind of people
at that. Its great need ii intelli
gent, practical farmers, who understand tha meaning
of Intensified and diversified farming, men who will
buy land, not for speculative purposes, but with the
idea of clearing off the sagebrush and making par
nianent and comfortable homes. Such men are bound
to succeed. Then ii room for thousands of them.
Developing .Sugar beets have been grown ex-
Various perimentnlly throughout the Klam-
Industries nth Vnllcy. The percentage of sugar
in high, ns will be noted from the
following mitilymri made by tho United States De
partment of Agriculture from beets grown near
migar in beets, per cent., 21.7 j sugar in juice, per
rent.. 'J 1.1 j roeflleient of purity, 63.1.
i:peritnc.' has demonstrated that excellent ns
iat.igiiH, onions mid celery can be grown, the tule
l.'iinU being very similar to those of tho Sacramento
mill .Snu .Joaquin Valleys of California, where such
U'k'etalilcM, nri so suceesifully cultivated. Through
out the world tho reclaimed marshlands are the best
united for the highest development of dairy inter
ests. There is nn question that this will become a sugar
beet producing section and that a number of facto
ries will be built and operated with the development
of the industry.
All Kinds nf fruit adapted to the temperate zone
thrive here apples, pouches, pears, cherries, prunes,
plums, iiprieols and nectarines do well, and small
fruits bear abundantly nnd of excellent quality.
There are a groat many small orchards throughout
the basin Hint prove tho adaptability of the region
to the profitable production of fruit.
K. h. .Smith, former president of the Oregon State
Hoard of Horticulture, gives it ns his opinion that
the foothill londs are specially ndnptcd to apple
growing.
Cultivation of the potato has passed boyond the
experimental stage, the sandy loam of the uplands
producing them in great abundance.
Klamath County wheat, grown without irrigation,
took tho premium nt the New Orleans Exposition.
The most important forage crop is alfalfa, the soil
being peculiarly adapted to its growth. -

Be Bold fs a large area of good land for sale
nt reasonable figures, prices rang
ing from about $15 to $35 for unimproved, and $20
to $50 per acre tor Improved land. Land adjacent
to the principal towns commands hisrhcr prices. The
purchaser pays for the water right at a cost of about
$18 per acre to be paid for in ten equal annual in
stallments without interest. This amounts to leas
than the ordinary annual rental paid private ditch
companies. Some of the irrigators of Klamath Val
ley (and they are the most prosperous farmers) have
already paid out to such companies for water $60 per
aore and rwn no wnter. All of these companies have
been purchased by the Government and included in
tho ayatom.
No publio lands will be open for settlement for
several years.
Olimata Tho uplaud soil is mainly a rich aaudy
and loam of great uniformity and composed
Soil largely of disintegrated and eroded lava
with an admixture of volcanic ash and
diatomaceoua earth, tho latter material of plant ori
gin, formed in the bottom of tho ancient sea which
covered the greater part of the Groat Basin, nud of
which Klamath Valley is a northwesterly extension.
Such soil, characteristic, of many of tho richest agri
cultural seotious of tho world, including much of
Italy and the great plains of India, is extremely fer
tile, and of lasting productiveness. The lako and
tule lands are made up of a volcanic soil containing
much organio matter, a vegetable accumulation of
nges, and la of a peatty nature
The olinfate is extremely healthful and not severe.
There la rarely any Winter weather before tho latter
part of December, and but little aero weather during
the entire Winter. The annual precipitation is about
flfteeu inches, with littlo -ram during the Summer
months. , .
