Ilea, California, a total area of 200,000 acres.
The 1'rojuct embraces the conatruction of a very
reat iiiiluaKO of canala, lateraU and drainage oanala
mid will have its, principal source in Upper Klamath
l.nkf. Clear Lake and Horsefly are reservoir sites
whore Hood water will be impounded and utilized for
irrigation of hind inoluded in the upper portion of
tho 1'roject.
Work on the main canal waa started in the Spring
of l'JOU and the first unit of nine milca ia now com
pleted. About 13,000 acres of land will be irrigated
from the first unit, the laterals for which are being
constructed under the aupervision of the engineers
having charge of the 1'roject. Iiy far the largest
proportion of the land under the first unit is now ia
kugebrush and muat be cleared and broken in time
for crops in tho Spring or 1908. Work on the sec
ond unit is being done by the Government and em
brnci's nineteen miles of main canal and twenty-six
inileu of laterals to furnish water to about 20,000
' additional acres of land. Work on this unit will be
prosecuted us rapidly as possible.
Nearly one-half of the area to be irrigated ia now
under water to a depth of from one to fifteen feet
mul will be reclaimed by a system of drainage to
lower the level of the rivers and lakes. A large part
of the Hwmnp land nnd practically all of the valley
hind in the Klamath liasin are held in private own
ership nnd some in very large tracts which muat be
sold in tracts of 1G0 acres or less under the regula
tion, governing the perfection of a water-right.
KLAMATH'S For its development and protv
OttEATEST perity the Klamath Basin must hava
NEED people, and tha right kind of people
at that. IU great need ia InUlli
gent, practical farmers, who understand the meaning
of intensified and diversified fanning; men who will
buy land, not for speculative purposes, but with tha
idea of clearing off tha sagebrush and making per
manent and comfortable homes. Such men are bou&i
to succeed. There la room for thotuanda of them.

, Kxperieiipi' has demonstrated that excellent as-
parugtiM, onions nud celery can be grown, the tule
IiiiiiIh being very similar to those of the Sacramento
I mnl Snn Joaipiin Valleys of California, where such
vegetables are so Mucccssfully cultivated. Through
out the world the reclaimed marshlands are the best
suited for the highest development of dairy inter
eats. There is no question that thin will become a sugar
beet producing section and that a number of facto
ries will be built and operated with the development
of the industry.
All hinds of fruit adapted to the temperate zone
thrive here apples, peaches, pears, cherries, prunes,
pliiniH, apricots and nectarines do well, and small
1 fiuils bear abundantly and of excellent quality.
There are n great many Mimll orchards throughout
tho basin that prove the adaptability of the region
to the prolltable production of fruit.
K. L. Smith, former president of the Oregon State
Hoard of Horticulture, gives it as his opinion that
tho foothill lands are specially adapted to apple
t growing.
Cultivation of the potato has passed beyond the
J experimental stage, the sandy loam of the uplands
i producing them in great abundance.
1 Klamath County wheat, grown without irrigation,
, took the premium at the New Orleans Exposition.
The most important forage crop ia alfalfa, the soil
being peculiarly adapted to its growth.

ing from about $15 to $35 for unimproved, and $20

' to the principal towns commanda hurher prices. The
1 purchaser paya for the water right at a cost of about
' $18 per aere to be paid for in ten equal annual in-
' stallmcnta without Interest. This amounts to lesa
than the ordinary annual rental paid private ditch
I companies. Some of the irrigators of Klamath Val-
I ley (and they are the most prosperous farmers) have
I already paid out to sueh eompaniea for water $60 per

been purchased by tho Government and included in
the ayatem.
No publie landa will be open for aettlement for
several years.

Boil largely of disintegrated and eroded lava
with an admixture of volcanic ash nud
diutoiiiacooue earth, the latter material of plant ori
gin, formed in the bottom of the ancient sou which
covered the greater part of the Great Hnain, mul of
which Klamath Valley ia a northwesterly extension.
Such soil, characteristic o( many of the richest agri
cultural aeetiona of the world, including much "of
Italy aud the great' plains of India, is extremely fer
tile, and of lasting productiveness. The lake aud
tule landa are made up of a voloanio soil containing
much organlo matter, a vegetable accumulation of
ages, and ia of a peatty nature.
The climate ia extremely healthful aud not severe.
"' There ia rarely any Winter weather before the latter
part of December, aud but little aero weather during
the entire Winter. The annual precipitation ia about
fifteen inohes, with little raiu during the Summer
months.
