the annual convention.
The farmer and the back
t woodsman have grown popular
of late. Hia health, his wife's
health, aad the welfare of every
member of his household are
matters of especial interest to
the many candidates.
Public opinion has been prompt
aad efficient in the correction of
coauaercial evils when stated
specifically. This is one of the
coocluaioeu reached by Herbert
Knox Smith, Commissioner of
Corporations, as expressed in the
annual report of the operations
of the Bureau of Corporations.
The submission of 19 measures
under the initiative and referen
dum will cost the state of Oregon
approximately 115,000, or one
fourth as much as a legislative
aeaskm. This does not include
the cost of printing and circulat
ing; the original petitions, which
expense was borne by those citi
zens who were particularly in
terested in the measures. Tha
total expense cannot be accurate
ly stated at this time, but the
chief items can be roughly esti
mated. This is the time of the year
4otv iMiit tw iinuc tuiawgc-
ments to bold market days each
weak to draw the country trade
into the city. "This would be a
good move for the business men
of Klamath Falls. Special at
tractions could be arranged for
the entertainment of visitors and
a reduction sale by the merchants
.on one day of each week would
induce the farmers to come in.
The amount of goods sold
would warrant the merchants in
atwnjr on a very small margin
on those days.
The Schuebel case is drawing
to a close. The program is all
arranged and, if Mr. Schuebel
gracefully carries out the part
assigned him and asks that his
nomination be withdrawn, the
fight in the delegation will ter
minate and steps will be taken to
select another man for the office
till held by C. W. Bristol. Mr.
SdHMsbtl appears to be reluctant
about relinquishing the office for
which he was nominated, for not
only was his heart set on becom
ing; District Attorney, but, be
cause of the assurances given
him by Senator Bourne, he was
cocksure of being confirmed.
Jasper County has been noted
for the high grade of eloquence
produced by the public men of
thac part of Mississippi. An ap
peal, to the "mighty men of
Jasper" made by one of that
country's great men when a can
4jaate to the voters who elected
hiss, is aa follows: "Mighty men
of Jasper, if I can be instrument
al'in the hands of my people in
aiding a' few Jewels to those
that now thine in imperishable
( luster on the queenly brow of
' our proud commonwealth, whose
associated radiance, like the lam-
beat beauty f the star, U to
' gtiidt too footsteps of her child
' ran along the paths of peace and
traapnity, security and happi
ness, I Mall than have accom
