It certainly does look as though
there were some people out in
Oklanessa who do not want the
"uneesarable'' to enjoy the vot
ing privilege. The proposed law
compelling a man to be able to
read and to construe any statute
or Mjr clause in the state con-
before he can vote.
nice -a movement to give
the lawyer a monopoly on the
right of suffrage, and it would
cut out even some of that profes
sion if strictly enforced.
As long as a man agrees with
you, you think him a good fellow.
When he antagonizes your ideas
and doctrines, you don't like him
ao well. As long as the farmer
went about plowing, hoeing and
harvesting, and let the profes
sional politician run the politics,
and the monopolies run the busi
ness, nobody called him a crank
or an ignoramus. But' when he
took a hand in politics and began
to question the right of others to
rob him, the dogs of wor were
let loose on him.
.'To be entirely honest and
frank, I am compelled to say
that the message reads like the
ravings of (a disordered mind."
This is one of the comments of
Chancellor Jas. Day, of Syracuse
university, made after he had
read the message that President
Reosevelt sent to Congress. "In
my opinion it is plain that it is
not a message to Congress, but a
harangue to the people," he con
tinued. 'That part of the docu
ment in which an appeal is made
to class prejudice suggests a
shrewd but reckless demagogue."
There is an impression based
oa excellent foundation that
President Roosevelt is consider
ing calling Congress in extraor
dinary session this Summer if it
adjourns without attempting to
safeguard. what be terms' the
-wetfaM of the people. If this
saw is taken it will mean 'that
usflgsass may be tn Washington
daring the entire time of the
nsminaiing conventions snd the
campaign. This would give
Roosevelt a great advantage in
dictating the choice of the con
vention for .President, as it
