FRIDAY, JANUARY 13, 1905.
One of the first ami most important
rrMilntiuiia for you to make this year is
that of ¡laying up the subscription to the
local |m|ier. You bet!
Jacksonville is certainly taking rapid
strnlea forward in the way of public im
provement an<l private enterprise. The
latest is electric lights and a real, live
hand, loth of which we are now reason
ably sure of. Let 'em come!
The professional "knoAer" is always
in evidence and it seems that it require«
the combined efTorts of at least 20 good
men to counteract his influence. Some
times he proves a real benefit to a com
munity but he is generally a nuisance.
There are few, if any, says the Wasco
News, who are so I mow as to hope that
Senator .Mitchell is guilty. For over 21)
years ne has Iwen our most trusted rep
resentative at Washington. It would lie
a sa<l thing to know that the gray-haired
veteran of Oregon legislators has Ijeen
guilty of the lietrayal of the people's
trust, and we hope that he will lie able
to prove his innocence; if guilty, let hint
take the consequence of his acts.
Forest Grove, the educational center
ami site of the Pacific University, decid
ed at its recent election, in favor of
license and will now have saloons, for
the first time in its history. The pop
ulation of this place is certainly under
going some sort of a change. For years
ami years even the railroad was not al
lowed within the corjiorate limits of the
city for fear of a demoralizing influence,
an 1 now they are voting in favor of
saloons.
Since Senator Mitchell's indictment by
the Federal grand jury for alleged,
participation in the timber land frauds
in Oregon, he has not appeared in the
Senate C’aamlier but remains in the
seclusion of his room. With Congressman
Herman it is different. He is in his seat
in the Representative hall regularly and
gives no outward sign that he is in any
way concerned alxiut indictments and
timber land frauds. This is the char
acteristic difference in the men.
The Roseburg Plaindealer has recently
been sued for ¿10,000 damages by F. E.
Wooley, chairman of the school board,
who alleges to have been damaged to
that extent by an article appearing in
that paper and signed “Taxpayer" the
real author of which the management
refuses to disclose. If everybody that
imagines they are injured by newspajier
attacks could secure a judgment for
such a sum of money there would be no
newspapers in a short time.
