manner.
Miss Maud O’Brien is making a success
of school teaching on Thompson Creek.
Miss Ida Halleck has been ailing since
her return from Portland.

R. D. Maplesden, of Medford, who
, represents the Oregon Nursery Co., of
i Salem, one of the famous big nurseries
i of Oregon, was in Jacksonville Wed ties-
day on business connected w ith the deliv
ery of his orders for trees. Mr. Maples-
den stated that his sales had l>ecn more
than one-third larger than last year, yet
that was a tianner year in his experience
as a fruit tree dealer, and that he had
every reason to be confident that his sales
for next year would show equally as
great gains as the farmers were taking a
much greater interest in the fruit busi
ness. Even out in Klamath and Lake
counties, which have been supposed to lie
a cattlemeu’s country, the ranchers arc
planting fruit trees, some of them quite
extensively as is proven by the many
big orders he took in that section. His
sales in Siskiyou and other Northern
California counties has also lieen very
large and at the rate trees are lieiug
planted in that section it will soon be
one of the great fruit districts of the
Coast.

Manager E. H. Shepard, of the Hood
River Fruit Growers Union, has intro
duced a field or orchard box among the
orchardists of Hood River that is meeting
with approval by those who have used
this form of a box.
The orchard box is constructed to hold
a box of fruit loosely placed in. The
dimensions of the box are 15x20 inches,
10 inches deep. At each end there are
hand holds, making the boxes much
more convenient to handle. A cleat two
inches wide and one inch deep is placed
at the top of the box at each end. This
assures a firm rest for the boxes as they
are placed one above another in the
wagon. Thus they are not apt to slip
one into another and crush the fruit.
Manager Shepard says he secured 50
of these boxes for his orchard, and after
his orchard foreman hail used them one
day, he remarked that it would lie im
possible to do without them. Mr. Shep
ard speaks in high praise of these orch
ard boxes, and has one on display at the
office of the Applegrowers’ union, where
he explains the merits of the box to all
who come in.
To make an orchard outfit complete,
Mr. Shepard advises the fruit men to buy
a packing table, an outfit of orchard
boxes, a nailing machine, and he is now
arranging to have an orchard stand con
structed for use in setting the orchard
boxes on while the apples are being
picked.
The use of the orchard boxes, says Mr.
Shepard, more than saves tlieir cost in
one season by economizing time, no soil
ing of the packing boxes, no bruising of
fruit, etc.—Hood River Glacier.
