Friday, February 26, !9U4 The fourth annual meeting of the Pacific Coast Association of Railway Traf fic Agent* wa* held in Ashland last Satur day. There was a large attendance of railroad men from all section* of the West and they were royally entertained by Ashland. Such gatherings a* this are a great advertisement for Ashland and that town is ever alert to take up any scheme that will give strangers a knowl- edge of the town. There is no more effiective and profitable way of advert is- ing a town than by public gatherings, and the town that secure* the most con vention* is the most prosperous. That Jackson county is gaining in pop ulation and at a rapid rate is shown by the strength that the county will have in the political state conventions to I m * held this spring. Of the 3.3 counties in the state, Jackson will rank tenth in the Re publican state convention, having 12 del egates, holding the honor with Wasco which alto has 12 delegates. In the Democratic state convention Jacksen will rank ninth with 10 delegates toitscredit. Of the counties adjoining Jackson, Jose phine will have seven delegates in the Republican state convention and Klamath will have four. In the Democratic con vention Josephine has five delegates* ami Klamath three. At the rate that the vot ing strength of Jackson county is gaining on that of the other counties of Oregon it will not lie so many years until thiscoun- ty will I m * one of the leading powers in all state political gatherings. the debt now isnot an imperative matter, /----------- ------------------ ------------------------------------------ but to secure good road» is, for roads are an urgent necessity to the continued de velopment ami prosperity of the county. A Jacksonville Millinery The Ancient Order of United Workmen has a firn* record to its credit in Jackson ville for in the 22 years since the local lodge was organized it has paid $40,000 to the heirs of its deceased members, am) what is more than is done by many of the old-line insurance companies, these losses have been paid promptly, no legal tecnicalities la-ing employed to defeat or hold back payment«. The Workmen is the pioneer of the beneficiary orders and while in recent years it has not made the gain in membership that some of the new orders have it is on a safer foundation than ever and it is now starting a new era of prosperity that will enable it to maintain its leadership of all the insur ance orders. The Workmen liave success fully ¡ussed the difficulties brought on by too low assessments under which its first policies were issued and now the order lias no fear of a bankrupt treasury. The new orders now giving insurance at a lower rate than the Workmen will I m : forced to susjn-ntl or to raise their rates so soon as a large number of their first members become old ami begin to die. A rate that will be self sustaining when an order is organized largely with young men will bring bankruptcy when the order liecomes old enough to have a large number of aged members. The Workmen found that out and the other beneficiary orders will also find it out. The insurance orders have come to stay for co-operative insurance can be carried on at a lower rate than by private com pan ics having high salaried officers and to j»ay its losses out of a reserve fund that may I m * stolen or dissipated by bad invest ments, a menace that is not hanging over an insurance order that meets its pay ments by assessments on its members.
