Sheriff Rader has been away since last
Friday assisting his brother John Rider
in bringing their stock cattle in from the
Dead Indian range. They will place
their cattle ill pastures near Tolo. They
brought in their l»eef cattle two weeks
ago and put them in a pasture near
Central point. It is very few times in the
liistorv of this Valley that range cattle
have had to be brought in so early. Us
ually feed is good on the ranges until
alxiut the first of Novetnlier and often
later than that.
The excessively dry
season is the cause of the feed failing so
early this fall. It is making a serious
exjx nsi to many stockmen to begin feed
ing so early.
J. A. Krewson, who is a land clearer
by trade, following that work in the
East before he came to Oregon and w ho
has a large contract clearing land for
l’rof. A. P. Armstrong on Laurlash farm,
was in Jacksonville Tuesday having a
stump puller rebuilt at Chas. Basye’s
blacksmith shop. This stump puller is
an invention of Mr. Krewson’s and with
it one man can pull the largest matiza-
nita grub in less than a minute and small
oak, pine and other trees can be pulled
alm >st as quickly. The machine is on
the plan of a capstan. The drum of it is
a 2'i inch steel shaft, turned by means
of an eight foot lever, the cable lieing
wire rope. The machine is simple of
construction and is mounted on runners
so that it is easily moved, one man read
ily handling it.
