THE ECONOMIC SITUATION (By Myrtle Campbell) So much has been written about the economic situation that there seems to be nothing left to be said on the subject. If we could only awaken to the fact that we bring or cause all those conditions on ourselves by our stupidity and ignorance we might progress a little faster. As it is we are always In the midst of some kind rtf upheaval either economic or indus trial slavery or oppression, and only remove one shackle to be bound with another. Our sense of values are mixed The American dollar is the basis of suc cess and progress and only in novels does man put character above the false standards of money, economic power, and prestige. I owe it to my self and family to take advantage of every opportunity to climb the ladder of materia! success and power. That is the motio of every ambitious man to carve his destiny in this world. This mundane aggressiveness depriv es him of spiritual iprogre**. warps his soul by centering his thoughts on his oun ego. and causes him to tram ple down anyone «'ho stands in his way. What a false standard of life! One of our able writers says that those who are being oppressed are the weak. To be physically weak has nothing to do with the soul. The op pressed may be weak physically, but giants spiritually It takes character to stand the strain of oppression and slavery as it is the acid test that shows the virility of the soul. He is weak who would down bis fellowman: he who would rise over tbe sweat and toll of h:s brother, has a mors! weak ness that is for more deplorable than any physical handicap. In speaking of the races this writer ■ Iso says to stop thinking white or colored. He might add to atop feeling colored. The color is accidental, tran sitory. and external, and has nothing to do with the ipo'.entlality of the mind, except if anything, to make It more alert and susceptible to unfold- ment thru the power of educa'lon. The color, we learn is caused by the posi tion of tho sun for thousands of years to Africa, the home of the Negro. The shite race becomes darker in a tropi cal climate.
