M.D. The Advocate doe* not necessarily »hare in the writer'* views, but whether we do or not, the opinions are sane, logical and interesting It it the readers' as well as oui privilege to disagree with the writer who in vites your opinion upon the subject* discussed from time to time in thi» column. “ TH K COLLAR O F HR VSS” By S. W illiam Moore (Reviewed for The Advocate by Clifford Mitchell) s e e This is a story of slavery and the free ing o f slaves. The two principal male characters are half-brothers. The father a plantation owner in Louis iana. The mother o f Joe — a .ies.cnd- ant of a queen o f Spain, whil« the mother of Sam—Joe's half-brother— was a slave on the fathers’ planta tion. O f course, she was black, a * a The father and mother die — the plantation is sold — the boys go their separate ways, tine, already free by virtue o f his race, while the slave boy frees himself by escaping. They both head West. The years quickly pass Through rough experience they both attain manhood, each, strong, and powerful in his own domain. * • • Eventually they clash they do not recognize each other. Each is in love with a g irl—Joe— with the daughter of a Spanish land baron— and Sam— with the Indian maid o f Joe's girl Sam is now the chosen chief o f a band o f Indians, while Joe, along with the Spaniards, are their bitter enemies. • • • Their battles, their love quests and adventures, are thrilling, so much so, that the entire 250 pages o f the book are eagerly read, in spite o f the fine print and many typographical errors. Eventually, love, peace and under standing come to all. A very inter esting story, exposing the fallacy of race or class superiority. Ralph C. Clyde City MYALGIA Myalgia is a condition that effect muscles or groups o f muscles in such a way as to cause pain o f vary ing degrees o f severity and occasion ally stiffness and general disability. Myalgia is often spoken o f as mus cular rheumatism. Myalgia has many causes. A sud den chilling o f the body may bring on the condition. Straining and any over use o f muscles is quite liable to bring on muscular stiffness, as in the case o f athletes or laborers who overwork. Frequently acute or chron ic infectious diseases may be blamed. Acute rheumatism in influeiiia, — arlet fever, typhoid fever, tonsil itis, syphilis, diabetes etc. are often the offenders. Metal poisonings o f ten cause myalgia— especially had ami mercury. Inflamalory conditions «f the muscle or the underlying or gans are quite frequent causes. For example acute appendicitis or peri tonitis causes extreme muscular tend- ernes*. The most common types o f my algia are torticollis (stiff neck), riemodynio (belt-like pain along one or more ribs! and lumbago. The duration o f myalgia varies. Acute cases last from a few days to one or two weeks. Chronic cases continue— keeping the patient up and down— from one month to many months. The muscular pain is usually so severe as to completely disable one. Myalgia that fails to respond to rest in bed, irritating rubs and hot applications should be carefully in vestigated. ------------ o------------ bv Nancy Lee COI NCII CALENDAR A new department is being offered to the readers o f the Advocate. Petitions, re monatranees, or communication» to be 1'sinaidered by the City Council should be addresses! to that body only. Such «iocuments, in order to receive atten tion at the weekly meeting o f the Council, which falls on Wednesday morning, must I«1 filed with the City Auditor on or before Saturday, at 10 A, M. They are then given a place and number on the printed calendar. There was a time when there was no calendar, and a number o f good ami bad measures slipped through the City Council. As Councilman at large during the aldcrmanic form o f govern ment, I fathered the ordinance that brought the Calendar idea into effect. I feel very proud o f the Calendar which has become a necessity. Council. A V gmbqkvgbyll.lilemfwp Measures that are filed after Satur «lay at 110 A.
