THE SCO TTSBO RO W illiam PieCens, D IS G R A C E Field Secretary of the N .A .A .C .P . in a letter addressed to the Daily W orker, Comumnist Party- organ, broke unofficially the silence that the N .A .A .C P . has maintained on the Scottsboro cases. Wckens writes, “ This is one time when every N e gro with in telligence enough to read w ill send aid to you and the International Labor De fense." The promptness with which the white workers have moved toward help ing the innocent and helpless N egro boys, sons o f black workers, is significant and prophetic". Pickens enclosed a check for the International Labor Defense as his contribution to the Scottsboro de fense. Mrs. Claude Patterson, mother o f one o f the defendants, left Chatanooga to aid the League o f Struggle for NegTO Rights and the International Labor De fense in raising funds and organising fo r the defense o f the boys. The Scotboro cases are not those o f Conymifts and the International Labor Dentense is not the Comunist Party. Its constitution as sent to ,th is paper calls it a broad mass organization, organized to defend all members o f the working class who are persecuted fo r being such and enlists workers thruout the world and friends o f the working class for such work. T h e I.L.D . states that the legal lynching o f these days is a direct attack upon the grow in g organized re sistance o f N egro and white farmers and workers in. jhe South in an effort AS WE GO TO PRESS WE LEARN IHE SAD INTELLIGENCE OF IHE DEA1H Of MRS.
