The Capital “ N” In Negro
The N. A. A. C. P. most o f think,
is right in attaching importance to the
fact that a long list o f periodicals have
heeded its arguments and decided to
print the word Negro with a capital N.
W ere it not for certain events in our
American history, this o f course would
be an extremely trivial thing: there is
no reason in logic why the name of any
race should he capitalised, and in some
languages, as for example the French
and the German, it is not.
But in ou r language, the names o f
races are capitalised, and that in the U.
S. the Negro race alone should have been
designated by a small letter can hardly
have been the result o f accident.
It seemed to reflect the conviction of
the white man in our early days that
the Negro was in some way inferior to
other races.
That the practice was retained, long
after constitutional amendments and
other pronunciations had put a theoreti
cal end to the notion o f inferiority,
smacked of hypocrisy.
The association is right in working
for the capital N, and the readiness with
which so many newspapers, magazines,
etc., have agreed to use it indicates that
the hyprocisy was to a large degree un
conscious.
So doing, they have contributed in a
quiet but enormously effective » a y to
the racial pride o f the N egra It is in
teresting, by the wav, how many o f the
newspapers on the association's list are
published in the South. It is merely one
more sign that the effort o f many in that
section o f the country to ease the acute
ness o f the racial problem is thoroughly
sincere.
The Health Drive
The Advocate heartily endorsed the
effort o f health agents to promote
health among the Colored population in
this city. T o that end, it is hoped that
all the Church, fraternal, social and
other organizations and individuals, will
join hands to make the effort the suc
cess that it is hoped for.
N o race can rise high without strong
bodies to support it, therefore it be
hooves every individual who is inter
ested in building a strong, intelligent
people, to do all in his power to pro
mote this health drive.
The Civil Service
Our city and county government is
now under civil service ruling, and all
who take the examination are supposed
to be rated according to merit and not
by pull or by color. But judging from
the many complaints that have been
lodged against the method o f rating,
there must be something radically the
matter. A number o f our Group who
have taken the examination for jobs as
janitors and common laborers and have
passed with high averages, have been
promised appointments.

Fashion today borrows quaint de
tails from our grandmother's day for
costumes for every age. For instance,
the little

sketched above
features a fichu collar, as demure and
winsome as the little girl who wears
it. Making a frock o f material in
character with its design is one of the
happy ideas o f our time. Surely this

The collar must be lace edged for a
