Buying Power
The colored population of Portland
constitutes a great buying power.
Some 3000 colored people spend on
an average $25,000 per year for
clothes and shoes and 150.000 per
year for groceries More than $50.000
per year for luxuries—automobiles,
radios and the like Here is a sum
exceeding $115.000 being spent an-
nually by our group with none of
this money going toward the main
tenance, development or promotion of
the business of the colored race or
helping them to bette rtheir economic
conditions. No other race of people
on God's green earth is guilty of
such shameful negligence of their op*
portunity to improve their condi
tion.
Hoover and Haiti
President Hoover has sent his ap- |
pointed commission to Haiti to in- j
vestigate conditions. The Commis- j
sioners were all white, thus regard
less of the fact that the population ;
of Haiti is predominantly of African I
descent. Mr. Hoover, so far. has given j
the colored race less recognition than
any other president in the past $5
years, Wilson not excepted. But may- j
be Mr Hoover doesn’t choose to j
run for a second term.
The Mercer»
This week one of the large local
banks threw its resources into another
large bank and closed its doors. A
short time ago three of our large
insurance companies voted to unite
and operate as one. The road to
better business and success is consoli
dation.
Some of our thin skin brothers
and sisters are too ready to accuse
some one of being against them when
the real fact is they are too much
against themselves. Your failures and
shortcomings should not be placed
on the shoulders of others but should
be charged to poor management and
extravagance The world always hon
ors those who sacrifice and succeed
A good worth while citizen can al
ways be depended upon to boost their
home enterprises, but the happy-go-
lucky, God-send-Sunday kind is al*
ways trying to build up some outside
enterprise.
Franklin Korell has announced for
re-election to congress and from pres
ent indications he will have no op
position in his party for the nomi
nation. But it’s dimes to doughnuts
that some Democrat will buck up
against him in the fall election.
George Shephard has made it
known that he wants to be a judge
of the supreme court of the state.
Mr. Shephard is a good lawyer and
no doubt would make a good judge.
---------- o
The proposed recall of the city
commissioners and the mayor seems
to be creating more rough stuff than
all the candidates put together.
All that the candidates for office
seem to care about the colored peo
ple is their voes as they hire all white
people to boost their campaigns, if
elected they will give all the jobs to
white folks. Colored voters should
use much care as to who they vote
for.
