Strange lack of consideration, I call ¡L W hat a “ grand and glorious feeling” would spread oved these United States if our Congress should make op its mind that it would save several billion* dollars of expense by voting out our paid unemployed tin gods— the army and navy! Jnst think a moment, yon dub* o f taxpay ers— did it ever occur to yon that it is your money which pays for battle ships’ For the cost of every citizen* training camp? Foe every meat that is served to the campers in these camps? For the vacations which these smart youog men who go to our citi zen's training camp to play at war? Your husband i* ont of a jo b and yon are looking for work so that you can raise the tax money which will keep your home off the delinquent tax list. While—over at Vancouver, part o f your tax money will be spent to sup port the polo team. Just what ails our Public Library? It has never been so slovenly kept It is dirty and smelly—smells as if it were never properly ventilated. If one should get into the holy o f holies to enter any sort o f complaint to the head librarian, one gets most beauti fully snubbed for one's answer. Ex cept in one or two departments, there is no friendliness. Gone is that beauti ful spirit o f cooperation that prevailed during Miss Isom's time when "the library” was the rallying ground of all the organizations. If a group should dare to ask for the use o f a room for a meeting and that group should rep resent an unpopular opinion, that room it sure to be “occupied" on that parti cular night. I have heard complaint mm Heckle DuBoitt at Haiti Meeting in Eaat Orange New York, Mar. I —A stormy meet ing developed out o f criticism o f the American Occupation of Haiti, by Dr. W. E. B. Du Bolt, member o f the Board of Directors of the National Association for the Advancement o f Colored People and editor of The Crisis, at a meeting sponsored by lead ing dub women in East Orange, N. J. on February *0. The meeting, a luncheon gathering of the International Relations Com mittee, at the Hotel Suburban, was addressed by Dr. Du Boss, and Cap tain F. H. Cooke of the U. S. Navy. Captain Cooke asserted that the U. S. had intervened in Haiti for the good of the country only. When Dr. Du Bois charged that we were in Haiti "because the National City Bank of New York wants us to be there," a number of white club women excitedly xasailed hie patriot ism. Commenting on the disturbance at the meeting. Dr. Du Boss said: "I delivered substantially the same speech in New York and Boston With out arousing any excitement Only in a small place like East Orange, where a small social clique tries to rule, would there be such excitement. It is amusing that the disturbance began over my remarks about the National City Bank. N o one, it seems, can criticize that institution without hav ing his patriotism impugned in East Orange.” J. H. Turner. 1201 East Grant street who has been quite ill o f pneumonia, is reported to be well on the road to recovery. Mr. Turner is able to be up and around his home. after complaint from students who go there for help and are told that "we are not supposed to give students in dividual attention”. W e arc told that “ books are not in" when we are stand ing right in front of them and grab them ourselves as soon as the librari an's back is turned. Complaint to the library board avaieth not. It begins to look to some o f us common people as if we are being taxed so that some o f the “ public servants" at the library can take “ trips abroad". Time, Mesrs. Library board, that you sat up and looked into things on the quiet in stead o f being so busy you cannot pay attention to what is going on up there. Get off the board or wake up and see that the public is at least treated cour teously—just for whose benefit is the library maintained?
