ment to the Constitution with a fra «
for all riot o f prohibition oratory—
the moat strenuous and spectacular o f
tbe current session.
Taa years ago, on January Id, 1020,
Nebraska formally deposited in Wash­
ington tba thirty-sixth state ratifica­
tion o f tbe Eighteenth amendment. I f
there waa any at that time who pro-
dieted that prohibition would be a set­
tled Issue with tbe passing o f n
decade, tbelr prophecy waa obliterated
In tbe storm on Capitol hilt.
Four lengthy prohibition speeches
were delivered In the house o f repre­
sentatives and three In tbe senate, de­
spite tbe efforts o f leaders In tha lat­
ter body to keep It at work on the
tariff bill. It waa estimated that some­
thing like 2S.0UU words o f wet and
dry controversy flowed Into tba con­
gressional record during tbe day, deal­
ing for tha moat part with tha quee-
