A deputy district attorney recommends and a judge sentences the man to 11 months in the county jail. Just a few weeks before this same judge sentenced the father of a family of five children to prison for ten years for stealing a lot of groceries and wounding the procer with a pistol shot in the process. A deputy dist rict attorney recommended that his plea of stealing to feed his family be disregarded because the man had $28 in his pocket. The deputy said the man was therefore not destitute, and should have a heavy penalty. Oh, consistency, thy name is not known in the court house. Good news at last! Spraying Larvex: AGED NEGRO IS ORDERED TO PAY $950 EACH MONTH Los Angeles, June 23.—Edw. Cruse, 8G-year-oId Negro, who said he be longed to the Cruse’s of Halifax, Va., before the civil war, today faced the problem of paying $950 back alimony. Superior Judge Rosenkranz filed the order against Cruse upon petition of his wife, Cora Cruse, who claimed the ex-slave owed her $1250, having ceased years ago to pay $5 a week alimony previously granted. “I gave the money to the children,” Cruse said. The children were called to the stand and testified that their father gave them money each week with instruc tions to “spend it before you get home so the old woman won’t get it.” Judge Rosenkranz suspended the weekly payments and directed Cruse to pay the $950 in monthly installments of $10 each. Doc Howe, ex-Portland waiter, now a waiter on a steamer running from Seattle to Alaska, was a caller at The Portland, Saturday. Mothproofs fabrics not washable—clothes, rugs, furniture. In ^ a large number of the prettiest frocks it's the collar which bids for first at tention—and receives it This is no wonder, for every collar seems to be vying with the 'hers in distinctive ness and originality. In this frock the collar is generously flattering. It develops on a slenderizing diagonal line, and is accented by pleated frill ing. It is not, however, the only feature, for the circular left side dra pery and the diagonal line of the girdle both contribute to the slender izing effect of the frock. Excella Pattern No. 2974. The world takes for granted many things it values most Fortunate it is that things of the greatest value and usefulness do not cost in proportion to that value. For exam ple, the Telephone. What would its cost be, if charged for in ratio to its usefulness— this convenient instru ment that broadens your social contacts, sum mons the doctor, opens your door to business profits, or lets you hear the voice of a loved one far away? If no telephone had ever been seen in this city, and such a service were suddenly created, the well-to-do would willingly pay $50, $100 or even $500 a month to have it in their homes. A single successful business deal would pay its cost for weeks. A single life saved thru prompt telephone com munication would jus tify such outlay forever. Yet—the telephone is available to everyone, and its cost is only a few cents a day. And there are more telephones being in stalled every day, there by making your own telephone even more useful.
