I am by the side of that m anger in Bethlehem. I see a new -born babe. It is a helpless babe needing a m other’s care. It is all w rapped in sw addling clothes. A teacher once said, “a religion w ithout its m ysteries is like a tem ple w ithout a God." The "fact” explains m ore than any theory of mine. T his “grace of G od” is however, the evolution of the W o rd o f pro mise into a living fulfilm ent, pu lsat ing with flesh and blood. It "has appeared” in a child born; born to grow , to m ature, to live until sin | dies and heaven's portals sw ing ajar for all w ho will believe; born “to save all m en.” And this astonishing, needful and m ysterious unity of God and m an, that cannot be disjoined in the person of our adorable Lord, is w hat this day actually brings to us in that m anger. T his. then, is w hat C hristm as really means. A nd next, we inquire, w hat in fluence should this exert over us? H ow should we observe the day? H ow show our rem em brance of this astounding grace? Shall we give ourselves over to w hat is called in this text, “irrela- tion"? T o a heathen observance, built around the absurdity of Santa Claus? T his is irreligion. It is a “trick of satan to betray C hristians into idol a try .” It is not long before children schools u t to renounce irreligion and w orldly passions and to live a life of self-m astery, of integrity and of piety in this w orld."
