CHORUS GIRL ENDING ALL
(Continued from Page One)
Harvey was called from Harlem
Hospital and the pulmotcr spuad
from the Consolidated Gas Company
was also summond. All attempts
to revive her were futile and Dr.
Harvey soon pronounced her dead
The medical Evaminer was immedi
ately notified and the body was
ordered Ifet in the apartment.
Mrs. Ledbetter was completely
overcome. She told the police that
a few days previously the landlord
had given her daughter, who was
the sole support of herself, mother
and seven-year old (laughter, a dis_
possess.
The scant furnishings
were mute evidence of their pover
ty. Many of Mrs. Wiliam's fellow
performerf from “ Showboat" visited
her home Sunday evening, sorrow
fully.
“ I have tried hard to keep things
going," she said in a note to her m o
ther, “but I am a complete failure
and know it Giving up my home
is more than I can bear. I want to
die. . . Nobody is to blame for this
but 1ne.”
Further on in this note, which
sounded to the mother like a voice
from the dead, she said, “ Have my
body burned and throw the ashes a-
'way—as it is useles* after death.
Forgive me if I’m weak and try to
understand— God grant that you will
be happy some day.”
In the same note she asked that
that her little daughter. Gloria, be
taught to be a good girl “ as she is
the only person that loves mother
and thinks I'm wonderful.” She also
instructed her mother to let “ the
Williamses” have gloria because they
would provide everything else for
her.
In the second note, addressed to
'‘"Willie," she wrote:
“ Good-bye, man o f my heart. I
love you and only yon—I ahve done
wrong to yonr wife, but eobldn’ t
help it—love was bigger than me.”
She closed her note in a piitifn!
revelation of her utter despare..
' f.'hirlmg you know how bad I felt
when ^ou left me this morning
I
can't go on like this.
My back is
against the wall and I quit— Always
remember I love only you, and if
you can, please come tb my funeral—
Try to remember me as I used to be.
Willie, sweetheart lovable."
A cryptic missive was left behind
for the eyes of her husband, J^py
Williams, addressed unknown, in
Iwhich the wife simply said: good
bye, Roy. I hope you marry Sip.”
Mrs. Ledbetters revealed later that
when she went to church Sunday
she left her dauhter at home in the
company of her friend. Singleton.
This incident is borne out by a line
statement contained in the girls let
ter when she wrote o f how she felt
when "W illie” left her.
Mrs. Williams' body was removed
Sunday evening to the funeral par
lors o f Granville O. Paris, 151 West
131st street, where it was on view the
next day.
Today at noon the funeral services
will be held there over her remains
and the interment will be at W ood-
awn Cemetery. Among the earliest
floral pieces to arrive at the bier
were those from Mrs. Willie Jordon.
Maggie Springer and Mrs Ledbet
ter, mother o f the dead girl.

1 he L’ nited States Constitution
guarantees to all men the right to
the pursuit of happiness.
The 1928 Republican platform de
clares for the draft of both men and
property for both domestic and for
eign war.
I 1 hat portion of the Republican
platform i( unconstitutional.
. Neither prohibition nor farm aid,
but shall we have Democracy or
Militarism, is chief question that
must be answered in this election
It is never oecessary to force men
to defend good government and we
want no other kind. When we, as a
nation, reach the point where we
cannot voluntarily defend ourselves,
we will no longer be a democracy.
The draft system has never es
tablished peace in Europe and it will
nerver establish peace in America.
The men who organized the L!ni-
ted States Government advised us
to keep out of European entangle
ments The draft system is one of
them.
A vote for the draft system is a
vote for Europeanism and war
During the past few years we
have heard much about the little
A,mercians. but people who are
working to establish the 1928 R e.
publican platform as law in this na.
tion are not even little Americans,
t The command is, “ Render unto
Caesar the things which are Caesar’*
and render upto God the things
which are God's.” By which we
learn that our first and most impor
tant duty is concerned with Govern
ment.
Yes, according to the words of
Jesus, you are supposed to vote
and take an interest in the problems
o f your government.
It is not possible to protect your
soul without your body and not
possible to protect your body with
out good Government.
In Europe men work sik day* and
are herded out for military training
on, Sunday.
That little gang of money chang
ers who met in Kansas City is try.
ing to establish the sames ystem in
the United States.
Under the Republican platform,
the recruiting officer can take a man
and hi* property and then place
his wife and children in the poof
¡house.
Wake up, America! Wake up!
