In this letter of resignation, Mr. Russell says in p art: “Colonel Sherril, by his deliberate course of contem ptuous injustice to ward the colored people of this city, took himself out of the cate gory of public servants that merit any ap plause from their fellow men. Legal ly, constitutionally„and from every view-point of social welfare, the col ored people are entitled to every right (C ontinued on page two ) ---------- o---------- DOES THE PULLMAN PORTER WANT IT? More and more with the reviewing of facts it is made clear that the “C A U S E ” of the Pullm an po rters a n a maids is not going to be prom oted by the gathering of their clans and forming them into a LTnion, to be know n as “T h e B rotherhood of Sleeping Car P o rte rs.” A fter a half cen tu ry of service in a C o rp o ra tio n who has within the short period of fifty years raised the wages of an employee in the Pullman srvice fiom E ight Dollars ($8 00) to One H u nd red and four Dollars! $i()4 00) ner month, it would seem rank injus tice to claim th at said Pullman era- oloyees had to fight for a living wage. I t is a well known fact that the per- equisites allowed by an unw ritten law bring most of the m e n ’s m onthly wage close to T w o H u nd red Dollars, in m any cases more. Compare this re muneration with the m onthly salary of manv educators and technical men W ith all that the Pullman P o rters have ?c«-omplished and accumulated ■ n every section of the United State.» it is loolish to think in terms of other than prosperity of the present con dition. W o rk in g for the P ullm an C o m pany has never narrow ed a m a n ’s chances to show w hat was in him and rise to the best that was in him. T he young men of the Race have been given g reater opportunities an«I m o re security in occupation th rou gh the em ploym ent of the Pullman Co., than any o th er field of endeavor. T h e C ompany has ever employed the Col ord college student during the v aca tion periods, had him assigned to the best runs and made higher education possible for many a fellow who o th er wise would never have made the fin ancial grade for the next session. W ork in g with the Pullman C om pany has made travel possible for thous ands of colored men, who in any o- ther line of work could never have left the small tow ns of the N o rth or the obscure Southern districts so far away from the cente rs of education and progress. It has gis-en the colored man of the L’nited States a splendid contact with humanity that has unconsciously broadened his viewpoint o f life and developed his m entality along unus ual lines. T h ro u g h this agency he has received an education to be envied. He has m et the g reat men and w o m en of all Nations, and he has listened in on the conversations of diplomats princes. N ot long ago some of the noted colleges of o ur country called upon a learned p o rte r scholar to ex ploit this valuable knowledge gained bv long and intelligent service in a Pullman car, in a lecture to their stu dents. These inimitable qualities that have been developed in the Pullman car po rter by years of efficient service have been im mortalized in one of the widest read novels of its day, “ E x cuse me" bv Rupert Hughes, which has been dram atized anti picturized. O u t of these y ears of co-operative service of the Pullman men and w o m en and the Pullman C ompany and out of the recent Conference in Chicago which was conducted "th ro ug h ou t with the utm ost spirit of fairness and goodwill on both sides” there should logically grow an unblemished unity of the Colored men and women of the Pullman service. T h is coming tog e ther for a comm on cause, the uplift and progress of th«1 Race in the field of labor, should not be defiled by that much abused term of the indus trial world, “U n ion ”, veneered in this case with the wor«l "B ro th erh oo d.” T h e pulhnan p o rters ran follow and adjust them selves to the economic gro w th of the past tw entv-fivt years w ithout jeopardizing their unchal lenged position in the industrial world with the binding forces of a “U n io n”, organized in the distorted sense of the word as understood to- dav.
