Los Angele* show colored children to
be as intelligent as the white*.
T he te*ts were given to 500 N egro
elem entary school children, during the
years 1922 23 and the report says “the
group is probably representative of the
N egro elem entary school population of
Los Angeles".
T he findings are sum m arized as fol
lows;
“ 1 Intelligence lev el—The median
intelligence quotients anti the d istrib u
tion of intelligence over the various
classificatory groups indicate* that
there is no significant difference shown
in the intelligence level of the N egro
children and that of children in the
fifteen schools taken as a whole.
"2. E ducational accom plishm ent.—
T he average accom plishm ent and range
of accom plishm ent for N egro children
is practically the sam e as for the total
population of the fifteen schools.
"3. Reading com prehension. — The
average ability for all N egro children
tested was 0.203 of a grade below the
norm , while that of pupil* in forty ele
m entary schools was 0016 of a grade
below norm. T his is not a significant
variation.
"4 A rithm etic ability —T he average
ability for all N egro children examined
was 0.103 of a grade below the norm ,
while that for pupils in forty elem en
tary schools was 0 38 of a grade above
norm . The difference represents a lit
tle less than three m onths’ school
work.
“5. Spelling ability. — The average
ability for all N egro children tested was
0 97 of a grade below the norm , while
that for pupils in forty elem entary
