T he provisional gift comes as a
suit of increasing interest in the sub-
i ject by the G eneral E ducation Board,
founded by Mr R ockefeller in 1902.
The board has been m aking an.annual
grant of $50.000 for this work during
j the last few years. It is understood
that the raising of the other $t.OllO,000
required ix virtually assured, owing to

ized to conduct the cam paign

yesterday over the proposed gift. Dr.
R obert R Moton, principal of Tttske-
gee and a trustee of H am pton, now in
New York in the interest of the en
dow m ent fund, said that the period of
greater advance in history for the race
had been since 1919. He pointed to the
fact that N orth Carolina had expended
$4.000,000 for N egro education last
year,
“T here now are 500 norm al schools
and colleges for N egroes in the coun
try," Dr. Moton said. “T hey have an
enrollm ent of 100.000. T here are 40,-
000 Colored school teachers and 2,000,-
000 Colored children in the public
schools. H am pton, founded in 1868 by
Brigadier G eneral S. C. A rm strong,
has 2.000 students, with 250 teachers,
and occupies 150 buildings on 1.100
acres of land."
