the protest of the N. A. A. C. P.
Mr. Brown spoke sgainst the film
before the board of commissioners of
the town and the N. A. A. C. P. pre­
sented a petition signed by 550 col­
ored residents, as a result of which
the five commissioners unanimously
passed a resolution directing that the
film be not shown.
The resolution adopted by the Mont­
clair commissioners is |s follows:
"Resolved, That in the opinion of

liam H. Lewis, former Assistant At­
torney General of the United States,
who has volunteered to head an inde­
pendent non-partisan movement among
colored people of the country for the
election of John W. Davis, Democratic
nominee, declared that he will oppose
the K. K. K. with the C. C. C. (Com­
ing Colored Citizens).
In commenting on the situation, and
why he will support Mr. Davis. Mr.
Lewis said:
“I propose to do this because the

New York, Sept. 3.—After being in­
dicted and released under $2500 bond
on charges of filing a fraudulent in­
come tax in 1921, Marcus Garvey,
president general of the Universal Im­
provement Association, remonstrated

was the result of a form of persecu­
