A HARD CUSTOMER The colored man who goes into business expecting to have an easy snap getting and holding the patron age of his group, will soon not only meet disappointment, but will learn that of all his customers, colored people are the hardest to deal with. There are many proofs of the unjust demands of our group. When they go Into a colored man's place of busi ness they want service and want it quick, and no excuse. First they think up a brand of goods they feel sure the colored brother has not in store and when informed to that ef fect he walks out vowing he' will never attempt to patronise his own again. On the other hand, it he goes into a white man's place of business, or a business operated by the other races, and asks for a particular brand of goods, and they have it not and offer a substitute, he readily accepts it with thanks, and goes his way re joicing. If he goes to a colored room ing bouse and things are not up to the standard, he bolts out for a Chi nese or Japanese rooming house and, regardless of how dirty or how un kempt It may be, he becomes a steady roomer, without complaint. The Greek and the Chinese get most of the colored people's patronage In their restaurants, etc. However, it is high time colored people learn something of the struggles and opposition which the colored man in business must un dergo to succeed, and remember that he does not always go into the busi ness for mercinary purposes, but in many cases to give the race represen tation and a respectable standing in the business world. Colored men and women should think and act the part of real men and women and help the struggling business man of his own race so that his business might grow and in time give employment to oth ers of his race. Help Wanted The Greek Government has ap pealed to the Near East Relief for help in caring for »00,000 children in the refugee camps of Greece. Owing to th« strain of its regular orphanage program for 40.000 youngsters upon its raaources that were over taxed following ths Smyrna »toaster, th« relief or ganisation has been unable to provide for thaw children. Where is the Near East and what is Near East Relief? The Near East is the Bible lands. The Near East Relief is an American organisation Incorporated by an act of Congress and co-operating with similar organ izations in other countries to salvage as many as possible of the survivors of Turkish massacres and deporta tions. What has the Near East Relief to its credit in the Near East? It has a credit of more than a million lives saved. How do we know our money gets there? First, because the work is being done, and second, because the accounts are audited by public accountants and reports made to a national congress and to the National Information Bureau which advisee community chests whether or not to give to a given organization. Be cause men like John R. Mott, ex Governor Allen of Kansas. Bishop Cannon and other nationally known men who have visited the Near East compliment the organization on its efficient, economical administration. If we limit our support this year, what will be the result? What does Portland do? After the Community Chest had thoroughly investigated the Near East Relief, they appropri ated »33.000 per year and because this was about half Portland's quota they have approved a further appeal to Sunday schools and churches. Is there a need this year, and If so, why? A half million people are homeless in Greece. They are a part of a million and a quarter driven from their homes in Asia Minor last year. A third of a million people are slowly starving to death.
