Soilwood 1703.- adv WASHINGTON. D. C, Oct. 34.— What conaectlon have the colored Americana with the great transporta tion arteries of the country, which were conceived by Republican poll cloa. Installed by Republican Ingen uity and regulated by Republican laws? At the outset II must be understood that of tbe 777,133 stockholders, own Ing Ibe railroads of the United States 703,433, or (0 per cent, live In the North. East and West; while only 74.686. or 18 per cent, live In the South That section ba* been quite a* laggard In financing transporta tion a* In recognition of human Justice. Transportation la to the country what tbe arteries ar* to tbs body It distributes the nation's production, population and food and develops Ila resources But wo asked: "What connection have the colored people, as a class, with thia massive In dustry?“ The 134,086 Negroes employed by the railroads In the United States are the answer. Of this number thus employed ar* 3304 female*, of whom 46 are flagwomen. There are also a number of maids on th* finest equip ped trains, while 2068 colored women are classed as laborers, probably car cleaners for the most part. Among the men there is naturally a greater diversity of occupation. Of the 133,- Ml males employed In this branch of Industry, »6.(21 era laborer*: 38.301 are porters; <306 are firemen; 3603 are boiler washers and hostlers, and 2887 are switchmen and flagmen. There are 1181 foremen, <18 yardmen. 476 baggagemen and 111 engineers; while In the administrative grades there are 3 steam railroad officials, 217 inspectors. 33 conductors, 16 tickets and station agent* and 7 freight agents. A conservative estimate of th* ag gregate wage* and salaries received by these colored railroad employee will not fall short of 3160.000,000 a yeary a sum of sufficient Importance to Justify, on tbe part of colored lead era sod voters, a close scrutiny of all railroad loslalation, particularly of a national character, that la calculated to affect the earning capacity and the wage scales of our transportation systems. From the foregoing flguro*. which are as absolutely authentic aa figures tan be, ft would appear that them ore many economic questions of arresting Interest to colored peo ple, which should command their at tention and close study. Established (* Tears In Portland C. AST week. Mis* Josie Miles, who hails from Summerville, S. C.. was signed up by the Starr Piano Co., of Richmond, Ind., at an exclusive singer of "Blues” for th* “Gennett“ records. All of which means a great deal when you know that prior to a week ago Mist Mile* had never warbled her melodious voice into a recording horn and is the first Race artist to be signed up to sing exclusively for that company. On the recommendation of Jos. M Davis, under whose direction she Is now working, Miss Miles made a teat for Gennett and was immediate ly offered a tempting contract call ing for forty “Blues' numbers dur ing the coming twelve months. Two days following the signing of the contract Mis* Miles made "Baby’s Got the Blues' and "Kansas City Man Blues," which will be released shortly. Although Mist Miles never had any recording experience, she isn’t an utter stranger to the public, as iet Z” <lui,e 1 favorite with th* iShuffle Along” company, which en oyen long and prosperous run* in vew York and other big cities. •Veteran phonograph men who have had the pleasure of hearing Miss Miles’ maiden record* predict she is a real find and that she will ba • sensation within a few month*.
