For the first seven months of the cur rent fiscal year. June 30, 1312. to June 30. IU13. the people of the United States hove drunk 38.804.000 barrels of beer, an increase of 1.850.000 barrel over the consumption of the preceding year. It a no wonder that a good many leople become poor, go crazy or go to the devil. That was a rather bard slam on the domestic science department of the University of Chicago when 200 college girls attended a special "pure food" dinner given under the auspices of the department the other day aud all but four were taken sick a few hours later with ptomaine poisoning. The trouble was traced to some canned beans. A very careful farmer of tbe writer's acquaintance told ns the other day that be bad quit tbe sheep business because he became tired of tbe almost inces sant noise, this being true especially after lambing time In tbe spring. He said the sheep started bleating before daylight and kept at It nntil past bed time and that it kind o' got on bis and his family's nerves. Thirty-six corporations in this state have failed to pay license fees for 1912 and as a consequence suits will be brought at Salem not only for the payment of the fee, with in terest, but also for the penalty ot 1100.
