O'LEARY FINISHES
WALK TO 'FRISCO
Daniel O'Lesry, aged 70 years,
Bleumcd into Sun r'runciHOO a few duys
kgo and, after he had handed a letter
to Mayor I'olpn intrusted to him by
the Mayor of Portland, O'Leary added
up his mileage and found that tie had
walked 101.857 miles since 1874. when
he began his professions! career as a
walker. "And 1 have more gasoline
left in mi tank." chuckled O'Leary.
after telling what a bully walk be had
down from Portland.
"Right now I would like to wslk any
msn of my age in the world, Weston
preferred. Tell you whst 1 bsve been
doing the last forty years on my birth
days: wslking as many miles as 1 am
years old. Last birthday, when 1 hit
the seventy mark, 1 stopped over to
Mount Hnori, a distance of about sev
enty miles, without any serious elT
orta." Mr. O'Leary recsils some of his
esrly triumphs, which were Dec ted
in San Francisco. In 1870 he walked
5o0 miles in six days, which was the
first time such a thing was attempted
on the coast. Later in the same year
he defeated Henry SchmehT of Chicago
in a six day match for $2,000 a side.
After that be walked all over the
world, including France, EngUnd,
Canada and Australia. Some of his
greauat triumphs were over Weston,
whom he defeated three times, once
being in England. In London, in 1880,
in a six-day match, be beat Weston 27
miles, wbicb created no end ot interest
throughout the world. It created so
much excitement that Parliament ad
journed the last three days to eee the
contest. Weston was backed by Sir
John Astley, a member ot Parliament.
Although an American, Weston took
sides with the English as against
O'Leary, who was reared in Ireland.
The Home Rule Question was at a
white beat, with Parnelle aiding the
Irish forces. Astley bung up a cham
pionship belt in addition to a side bet.
The bet was to have been won three
times. O'Lesry beat Weston the Hret
time easily, as already recounted.
Seoond time O'Leary competed for the
Astlay belt there were twenty Enlish-
men against him, and the odds were 20
to 1 against him. Because of poor
health, Weston declined the issue. O'
Leary defeated tbe big field handily,
walking 620 miles. Vaughn, tbe sec
ond man, negotiated 600. In his third
essay, O'Leary was beaten by Rowell,
who went go-as-you-please.
Mr. O Leary's IsBt strenuous contest
was at Cincinnati In 1907, wben he
walked 1,000 miles in 1,000 hours. He
walked a mile, rested the rest of that
hour, then walked another mile, rested
the rest ot that hour, and so on for
1,000 hours, which was a most arduous
performance for a man ot any age. "1
always keep my teet in first-class con
dition," he says, speaking of tbe art of
walking. 1 don't let any callouses
grow on the bottom. By using a little
sandpaper I.file off any growth and the
result my feet are soft, and smooth as
glass. I never use one pair of shoes
two days running. In fact, 1 used up
six pairs coming down from Portland,

The commission's report contains
tabulations which were most difficult
to obtain, but which were invaluable
In framing the recommendations bear
ing on safety und health. In this con
nection there are tables showing tbe
number of people on each floor In a
number of typical factory and offlce
buildings; showing the use of artificial
light near the windows of office build
ings on narrow streets at noon in sum
mer on a bright sunlit day; showing
the movements of people down stair
ways; showing the movements of
crowds on the level; showing the con
gestion In office buildings, factories,
large department stores, etc. From
such data calculations were made
showing tho length of time It would
take to get people out of certain typ
lenl crowded buildings, showing the
congestion that would result In certain
downtown streets if the buildings
were vacated In a panic and showiug
the Inadequacy of exit facilities In
many buildings.
Much attention hns been given by
the commission to tbe districting or
sonlng system In German and Aus
trian cities and to the lncreaslng'adop
tlon of this system of height and occu
pancy restrictions in ' the United
States. Tbe American cities repre
sented in such maps are Boston, Wash
ington, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Mil
waukee. Baltimore and Indianapolis.
A Town Planning Competition.
The University of Tolen, Tolen, Swe

purpose of developing as a business
speculation a considerable amount of
property which It owns on tbe out
skirts of the town. A portion of the

university's museum and botanical
garden, and these will be Included in
the scheme. They have reserved about
30,000 square meters for tbe future
uses of tbe university and suggest re
serving space for open squares, a prom
enade and a playground. Only apart
ment bouses are to be built and tbey
are to be of a type to attract people of
the middle classes. Tbe flats are to

with a trained man in charge of each

of these, possibly In New York, an-
j other iu Chicago, another possibly in
Denver, and the fourth in Sun Fran

at these headquarters would be able
to reach any part of the United States
in twenty-four hours. This would
bring the association Into closer touch
with tbe people of the entire country

disaster.
"An extension of the staff has be
come necessary because of the growth
of the work, aud any such change
would make it much easier for us to
take care of disasters we might have.
Lust year there were nine big ones,
and at tbe time of tbe flood In Ohio
it took 300 men on our staff in the
