MOLASSES AS A FEED
FOR BEEF CATTLE
Re for tho feeder can atudy the com-
para the value of feed Intelligently he
muat have a knowledge of the dlRea- ,
tlhle nutrleiiU) which they contain, saya
the Kaunas Fanner. Prime cotton
seed uicnl ai nold on the market at the
present time contains 37.0 per cent di
gestible protein. 21.4 per cent digestible
carboh yd ratea and 9-0 per cent diges
tible fat The cold pressed cottonseed
cakes contain approximately 25 per
cent digestible protein, 23 per cent car
bobydru tea and 0 per cent fat No cat
tle feed on the market supplies so
much digestible protein per hundred
weight aa does cottonseed meal, and
for that reason It la oftentimes the
most economical feed that can Im? pur
chased to supplement the cheaper
feeds of the farm, w hich are, aa a rule,
deficient In digestible protein.
Molasses such aa Is sold for feeding
purposes contains 1.5 per cent digesti
ble protein, 59.2 per cent digestible
carlwhydrates and no fat In experi
mental work which baa been conduct
ed at various experiment stations It
It Is claimed for the Shorthorns
that aa a whole they are heavier
than any other breed. In soma lo
calities, however, herda of Here
ford may outweigh Shorthorns on
adjoining farms. Both these breeda
average heavier than the Angus.
All are excellent cattle and produce
- the hlshcst grade of beef. Short
horn cow are better milker than
thoe of any other beef breed, and
for that reason It Is claimed the
young eteer mature earlier. The
Shorthorn bull hown waa a prlre
winner lust fall.
b;is been found that where used as a
portion of the ration blackstrap mo
lasses has had a value fully equal to
corn, pound fur ouud. At tbe Texas
experiment station a very successful
ration for full feeding steera waa made
up by using through a feeding test of
120 days nn average ration consisting
of 0.6 pounds of molusses. 8.6 pounds
of corn, 3 pounds of cottonseed meal
and 12.6 pouuda of cottonseed bulla.
The molasses replaced part of the corn
of the ration and the necessary protein
to properly balance the ration was
supplied by the cottouseed meal.
With normal prices for grains ino
hisses cannot be looked upon aa a feed
for replacing nuy considerable amount
of grain except In the south, where It
la much cheaper than lu the north. In
a year when economy In feeds of all
kinds Is necessary molasses may be
used us a means of stimulating tbe
consumption of low grade feeds which
would ordinarily not be eaten.
DIPPING THE FLOCK.
8hap Cannot Thrive Whan Infested
With Parasite.
No flockmaster ahould attempt to
raise sheep without planning to dip
them at least annually and In meet
cases twice a year. When sheep are
brought from other flocks, and eepe.
daily when transported there by rail
roads, they should be thoroughly dip
ped before allowed to mingle with the
rest of tbe flock.
Experience has taught sheepmen that
sheep thrive much better when their
sklus are clean. A good dip Increases
the quantity aud improves the quality
of the wool. It is Impossible for lambs
Infested with ticks or other parasites
to thrive properly, owing to the con
stant irritatiou set up. In trying to
get relief lambs often nibble at the
tliHt-e und swnllow small portions of
wool with fatal results. A good and
regular system of dipping the entire
Hock Is money well expended. Hence
most of the leading Oockuiasters dip
twice lu tho yeur once lu tbe spring
and again in the fall.
Tbe object of dippiug Is to destroy
the parasites In the fleece, such as scab
mites and Bheep ticks und lice, aud to
prevent subsequent attacks from the
same. In England, where sheep rals
ing has attained Its highest state of
perfection, dipping Is required by law
at least twice a year.
While dippiug may uot be done at
any season. It should. If possible, be
avoided In cold weather for obvious
reasons. If the flock Is badly Infested
It la Important to repeat the operation
In ten days In order to destroy the In
sects that have hatched during the In
terval. Better Farming.
COUGH MEDICINE FOR .
CHILDREN
Never give a child cough medicine
that contains opium iu any form
When opium la glvon other and more
serious diseases may follow. Long
experience haa demonstrated that
tlieie ia no better or safer medicine
for coughs, colds and croup In child
ren tbsu Chamberlain's Cough Rem

Try It. It contains no opium or other
harmful drug. For sale by all

THE SWINEHERD.
It doesn't pay to feed pigs after
they are Ot: neither does it pay
in aoll or kilt a Mir until It Is fit
Beparate the fattening pigs as X '
they reach marketable condition,
so as to give tbe smaller ones
better chance.
When feeding heavily, correct
ors In the way of charcoal, ashes,
salt and sulphur ahould be kept
In all the feeding pens and hog
yards.
Don't sacrifice the old sow that
la a regular breeder, even If tbe
price of pork la high. She Is tbe
kind that makes tbe pig business
certain.
In selecting young sows for
breeders It Is pretty safe to se

LIME FOR BROOD SOWS.
Necessary to the Health and Growth of
Dam and Pigs.
The Importance of supplying lime In
some form to brood sows and young
bogs Is often overlooked by the feeder,
writes IL T. Morgnn In the Country
Gentleman. An Investigator at one of
the agricultural colleges says that a
sufficiency of lime in the ration of Ihe
brood sow Is fully as Important aa a
sufllclency of protein. One thousand
pounds of corn contain only about
three ounces of lime. Tankage contains
nhnnr ten nounds of lime to each l.ooo
pounds. Clover and alfalfa hay con
tain twenty and twenty-seven pounds
resiMK-tlvely in each 1.000 pounds. It
Is evident that corn alone la not a
aatlsfactory feed either for pregnant
sows or for crowing Dies. It Is sur
prising bow quickly hogs will respond
In winter to a ration or clover or al
falfa bay.
Durlnc tbe grazing season this mat
ter of supplying lime and protein in
addition to the grain need cause the
feeder no concern, but during the
winter months both lime aud protein
must be aupplied. ooa or cod asnes
or charcoal supplied in generous quan
tities will furnish tbe animals with a
sufficient amount of lime. They will
also eat ground limestone I have al
ways made a practice of supplying nir
slaked lime to hogs of all ages. It Is
estimated that In an average litter of
pips about six ounces of lime enter Into
the composition of their bones. If the
sow has not had a well balanced ration
nr has been fed on corn alone she has
bad to supply the bone building ma
terial necessary for the development
of her young from her own body, and
If this has been Insufficient the pigs
will be weak and often deformed in
the head and joints. Rickets, or rachi
tis. Is believed to be due to a lack of
tho proper bone building elements.
This disease usually proves fatal In
rmin nles nnd Is much more frequent
ly observed in the produce from gilti
than in the litters from mature sows.
A good way In which to supply lime
Is to make a hopper which will hold a
hnshel or more and have it under
