LAKEVIEW IS ON
HIGHWAY ROUTE
8amuel Hill Decides On
Road To De Built Across
State.
Concerning the trip of Samuel Hill
and psrty through Csntrsl Oregon
recently, the Crook County Jonrnsl
contained the following article. In
connection with tba Uighwsy coming
to Lakevlew, the Exsmlner bed the
same Information, but wss withheld,
considering thst nothing should be
advanced regarding tbe report that
Mr. Hill would make on the propoied
routa.
Tbe Journal s:ys:
Ssmtitl Hill, tbe world-famous good
roada man of Marvhill, Washington,
sccomptnied by Messrs. Lock ley and
Johnron of the Portland Journal, were
in Prinevllla Monday night. Tbase
gentlemen bsva just completed a tour
through Central Oregon for tbe pur
pots of viewing out sn sutomoblle
rosd which will .connect with rosds in
California and Wsshintgon thst will
give an all the year sround rosd for
suto tourists from Southern Califor
nia to the Cansdisn line.
Tht y were rflad to report thst they
hsd been successful. Tbe proposed
rosd ssrts at Biggs, coming op tbrougb
Wasco and along tbe backbone of tbe
divide between the Deschutes and tbe
John Dsy rivers of Shsniko, down
Antelope csnyon, tbrougb Trout crsek
snd Hsy creek, up Mod Springs canyon
to J.amonta. thns avoiding Griixly
mountain to Prineville, thence south
psst Millicsn over tbe desert to Lske
vlew. No pert vf this proposed road will
bsve over a 6 per cent grade and can
be built at a less expense than any
through route in any other psrt of
the ststs. Rosds alresdy exist along
this route wbich can be pat in shspe
for use st a very little expense until
such a time as a permanent road can
te built. The obiect is to make this
an Internstionsl highway and hsve It
built under tbe supervision of the
Oregon Commission. Connection csn
be hsd temporarily by ferry with the
Wssbington road and eventually it is
the plsn to tridge the Columbia from
Biggs to Columbus. At Biggs slso
this rosd will connect with the rosd
which is being built up the Columoia
from Portland.
Mr. Hill bss made a study of the
sir currents slong the Paoifio coast
and has demonstrsted to bis own sat
iifaotlon that tbe rather equitable
cllmste of the region directly east of
the Csscades is due to tbe air currents
from the oeesn which reseh us through
three bresks in thst mountain chain,
the one to tbe north being tbrougb tbe
csnyon of the Prater river In Canada,
tbe next being tbrougb the Colombia
river canyon and the one to tbe sooth
being through toe csnyon of tbe Klam
ath river. These air currents spread out
gradually to the north and aouth with
out meeting with any sudden cold such
ss the currents do which strike sgainst
tbe hign mountain tops. Since precip
itation of snow and ram Is caused by
the sudden cooling of .the warm air
currents the mountainous regions
bsve longer winter seasons and the
suto roots from the Willamette valley
to Csilfornia over tbe Siskiyous Is
impssssble from early fall until Msy,
while along the route proposed snow
would be encountered only atout three
months in tbe year.
In his remarks Mr. Hill enumersted
some of tbe benefits which would ac
crue to tbe towns situated along this
road. He estitnstes thst 'during a
year thirty thousand tourist autos
would travel over this road, carrying
sn average losd of five psasengers.
Figuring tbe average expenditure of
each passenger per day to be 84, one
can get something of sn ides of the
smount of money thst would be dis
tributed by tourists along this route
during the yesr. Tourists as a class
srs well-to-do people. If one of them
should see s piece of land in his trsvels
which sppesled to him, he has the
money with which to buy and it is not
unreasonable to expert thst many will
actually stop long to inveat in real
eatste. Ibis road will pay for itself
every yesr.
Mr. Hill is the president of the Guod
Roads Association of North America
which holds a meeting in Philadelphia
next December and he promised tbe
business men of Prineville that if they
would see that the rock and stomp
were cleared from the existing roads
between here and tbe county line
south, he would see that Prineville
was put on the North America Good
Rosd map. Tbe people of Lake County
already having promised to take care
of their end ot tbe road.
There is determined movement for
tbe building of a permanent all-year-round
road betweenSouthern California
and Canada over the shortest route
possible with easy grades and Prine
ville is particolarly favored by nature
in being situated on this route and it
is "up to us" to do all thst we van
to help inlbis movement.
As an evidence that he in esrnest in
this work, Mr. Bill bss bad made a
urvey of tbe road from Biggs to
Wssco at an actusl rout to himself f
$2600 snd bss presented this sury to
the stste of Oregon thst it might be
used as an example of the wsy in
which a permsnent good rnsdi should
be laid out. This road ss surveyed
would Disks the climb op from Biggs
without exceeding at any piece at 5
per cent grsds.
This trip of Mr. Hill and his psrty
through Wsshington and Oregon is
costing them nesrly $1000 and tney
sre not asking thst the people wbo
will be benefitted by their efforts
should reimburse tbem one cent. Tost
tbe Portlsnd Journal and Mr. Hill
think enough of this movement to
mske this eipendltare Is a striking
example tbst tbe people of Prineville
should contribute enough to clesr toe
rocks from our present rosds. This
the business men bsve determined to
do.

RAILROAD OPENS
FERTILEGOIINTRY
Rumored That Line Will
Build From Lakevlew To
Susanvllle.
The folliwing railroad gossip Is
tsken from tbe Sscraroento Bee's
"Looking Westward" edition, which
is considered as one of tbe most reli
able special festores published on
tbis cosst:
The most important of tbe two new
stesro rosds is tbe Fernley and Lassen,
which bss been completed from Fern
ley, . Nev., to Bussnville, Lessen
County, and Is pushing on to Westover,
a new lumbering town that is being
built by tbe Walker Interests of
Minnesota, and which is to bsve a
population of about ,000 in another
yesr or two.
Tbis Is the first railroad to reach
Sussnviile and it is causing a great
change in the affairs of the whole
country, it will do still more gotd,
however, when it is extended on west
wsrd to a connection wltb tbe railroads
of tbe Sscrsmento Valley, giving a
direct, instesd of a roond sboot route
to Sscrsmento and San Frsmiisco.
The route for tbe extension to the
Vslley will bring it to Vine, Tehsma
County, or to Chico, the latter city
having been making strong efforts to
indoca it to make its junction there.
Tbe road is a brancn of tbe Southern
Pacific.
Tbe same road is planned to connect
with other proposed rosds of tbe ssme
company that sre to be built from
Lakevlew, Oregon, through Alturss,
and from Klamath Falls. Ore., south
westerly and southessterly, respect
ively, and to form a jonction at Look
out, Modoc County. Tbia project will
give tbe northeastern counties of Csi
lfornia a much needed system of
railroads and lesd to immense develop
ment of vsst latent resources. It is a
country of great possibilities, but it
remoteness from rsilroads or other
sdeqoste trsneportstion facilities has
prevented its development.
