BEETLES DAMAGE
0CH0C0 FOREST
Lumber Saved By Cutting:
Tree When Insects Are
Young:.
By a prompt campaign against a
flourishing colony of bark Deetles on
the Ochoco national forest in central
Oregon, tbe government ia eliminating
a danger wbicn threatened to destroy
millions of feet of timber.
Some authorities claim that tbe
amount of timber killed each year by
insects is equalled only by the annual
loss from forest fires. Among the
most destructive of these Insects en
emies are the bark beetles, one of
which, the mountain pine beetle, is
responsible for most of tbe damage
on the Ochoco forest. This deadly lit
tle beetle Is less than a quarter of an
Inch in length, but bears the ponder
ous scientific name of Dendructonus
monticolae Hook, which', being inter
preted, signifies killer of the moun
tain pine tree, discovered by Ilokpins.
Its methods of operation are inter
esting. Toe mature beetle bores
through tbe bark of tbe tree and ex
cavates a gallery in the inner living
bark and in the outer surface of tbe
wood in which it lays its egg. When
hatohed each young larva, or beetle
grub, cbannella into his growing por
tion of tbe trunk, feeding upon the
inner bark. When full grown the
larva, slier passing through a dormant,
or oupal stage, becomes beetle,
ibis beetle then drills out through the
bark in July, and, emerging into the
world reeks a fresh tree and starts a
new generation. With tnis "chain
letter" method, it soon infests a Urge
sres. The galleries or channels of
the larvae girdle the tree and kill it,
and tbe beetle's presence i usually
discovered, as it was in tbe Ochoco
forest, by a patch of red-brown dead
pine trees in tba midst of a moontsin
side of green. '
In fighting this forest scourge, the
method recommended ty the Bureau

Shorn of the glory of their victory over
