I don't suppose that I differ from tbe

Krndcd and harrowed and last, but by

solid and hoinoKeneous and prevent

Houthern (iood Itoads.
Theu when It Is opened to tbe pub
lic there Is a road superior to any pave
ment or macadamised surface for six
reasons, which are: This road is
cheaper to build In the first place tbe
material Is "right there." It Is more
easily and cheaply kept In good condi
tion. It Is oasler on horses' feet It Is
pleosauter for light and pleasure trav
el. It Is equal to any road for heavy
work aa long as It remains good. Wide
tires wld csnse It to remain good.
Tbe people the country over have
been very generous to themselves in
sssumlng such a vast amount of bond
ed Indebtedness for tbe purposes of
obtaining good roads.
Naturally tbe general Idea is that tbe
money thus expended will give them

will the rouds be kept up? Or will

I wish to suggest a method that will
meet the emergency, and If public
opinion fuvors It we cau have good

the coNt of upkeep will be so light
as to lie almost nominal. We should
give atteutiou not to the roadbed it

for In that direction we will find the
remedy against bad rouds.
Take the ordinary farm or lumber
wagon. In constant dally use every

light It weighs approximately 1.00(1
pounds, or half a ton. The wagon will
itnivoy 11 ton and perhaps at times
more than that; but, as we are dealing
only In generil tonus, sny tho wagon

with a tire tivii'l of two aud one-hall'

DUST FROM TAR ROADS KILLS
TREES ON HISTORIC DRIVEWAY
French Soisntist Finds That Bitumen
Pavemsnt Is to Ba Preferred.
Unless the present system of tarring
the roadways In the avenues of the
Hols, I'aris, France, is promptly dis
continued there will soon bo no trees
loft at all, according to an announce
ment recently made.
It Is officially stated that slie-e the
roadway has been tarred to minimize
the dust the mnnlHr of dead trees
which have had to le replaced by new
ones has multiplied by four. Moreover,
the young trees which have been pluut
ed urn unable to flourish, owing to the
poisoning of the soil, snd rapidly s-r
ish.
Although a grant of $0,000 was re
cently made by parliament for the
planting of new trees in tbe Avenue
du Huls, Ijo Forestler bss not yet
touched the money, asserting that un
til siuie new method is Introduced such
an expenditure would be throwing the
money Into the gutter.
Conditions are tbe same throughout
the more trequented roads, which are
treated with pitch, and there Is a strong
feeling on the part of the public that
no time should be lost in radically
'bunging tbe present method and in
suring that no further damage shall be
done to the vegetation of the historic
park.
In support of bis agitation Le Forest
ler Mlnts out that a commission, ap
pointed some time ago to inquire into
the matter, has already reported that
not only are all the ornamental plants
and flowers seriously affected by the tar
dust strewn on them from the wheels
of passing vehicles, but also that their
leaves first show spots resembling
burns and then drop off.
Among the trees two species, the yew
and the plane, seem to resist tbe effect
a little better than the others, but even
with these final destruction Is only a
mutter of a short time.
The cominlsstou recommends that the
rouds of the Bols be covered with
small puvlng stones or bitumen instead
of tar.
BETTER ROADS IN MIDWEST.
Michigan Takes Forward Steps South
Yst Far Behind.
States of the east, middle west and
far west are doing the most toward
building good nmds, according to tbe
nn-ortls of the good roads committee
of the American Automobile associa

states and tbe south are waking up,
but have not accomplished much in
their present legislative sessions. New
York leads all tbe states with her new
$50,000,000 bond issue. Pennsylvania
comes next, with Massachusetts, New

Michigan Is tbe leader among the

Government Will Carry Ita Showa to
Panama-Pacific Exposition.
Arrangements are to be made by the
United States department of agricul
ture, through I.ogau Waller Page, di
rector of the ollice of public roads, to
place on exhibition at the Punnmti-Pa-clfie
exposition In 1015 the greatest col
lection of road models ever displayed
in any part of the world. Tho models
will furnish exact duplicates of the old
Koman roads, French roads aud all
of the various types of miwlern roads,
together with miniature models of j

As a result of the instruction fur

HEALTH HINTJOR TODAY.
Rips Bansnas Not Indigestible.
There Is current a notion that
bananas are indigestible. This
Idea grows out of the fact that
few persons know wbeo a bana
na la ripe and ready to be eeten,
while many through ignorance
eat of the fruit before It ba
reached tbe stage of digestible
maturity. The pale or bright yel
low banana la cot ripe and If
eaten at this stage la pretty sure
to give tbe eater the same sort of
discomfort that results from eat
ing green apple or raw tweet
pots too. Bananas are not ripe
and ready for eating until the
akin has become deep yellow or
russet in color. Tbe skin may
tarn practically black before
tbe fruit inside becomes over
ripe. A thoroughly ripe banana
contains about 20 per cent of
wholesome fruit sugars, togeth
er with a small percentage of
protein and much water. Green
bananas, on tbe other band, con
tain about 20 per cent of raw
starch, which is highly Irritating
to the digestive tract and Indi
gestible to a degree. Another
reason why tbe banana la be
lieved to be Indigestible la that
tbe fruit la seldom properly chew
ed, tbe ease with which it may
be poked down tse ttixstt being
too great a temptation to Toting
America and bis elders. No food
Is digestible If swallowed, aa
bananas often are In large
chunks. Bananaa abonld be cut
from tbe bunch to that a protect
ing stem firmly protects the end
of each banana. Thoroughly ripe
banaoas are perfectly digestible,
very nutritions and most wholesome.
