I BY USEMIiAG If vou look at tha ordinary country road after a shower you will are small puddlei along the wheel ruts and tome times larger pools. This water stayt on the road surface because it cannot drain awsy into the side ditches. If you look closely you will see side ditches which have grown up with bushes and weeds in many cases, and which are ao far from the traveled part of the toad that tha rain water does not drain Into them. That part of the roadway wbera the wagons tiavel Is called the traveled way. To prevent water from standing on the traveled way the road should be raised in the center and should slope gently Into broad shallow ditchex. It is then aid to have a crown. If it is 10 feet from the center of the road to In .lie uitch, the iurface at the siue ditch shouid be at least 10 inches lower than litis at the center wnere the horrta travel. The road then bus a lu-i ch crown. Thu rain that falls on a road prop. dy crowned will run quickly to the M e and not soak into the surface or form pools, ine side ditchca for rurfacu water should run paraliil to tt.'i right of way, and ahould be open at every luw point so that the water can ru:i oiit of them into neighboring brook or , streams. If the ditches merely collect the water from thwoad 1 iiurface and it can not run away, large 1 rii.jtiM ujlll Iim Inrmad alnrtcv thm marl side, which will gradually soak into the soil beneath the road and make it so soft that the wheels of wagons will rot ttuoogn the road surface und soon destroy it. Sometimes water runs from, land along the road into the road a' d forma a little stream down the wheel tracks or lu the middle where the horses travel -When driveways into farm yards are built across the fide ditches the; frvquen tly form cliunaeli for water from the farm yard to run into the rua 1. The pipes under driveways become tilled with leaves or rubbish and the water can no longer run away. If thu driveways that atop the ditch water were rebuilt so that no pipes were necessary and the ditch could be left open, much trouble from aufrace water would be stopped. Sometimes roads run acrosa low ground or through a swamp where the road can not be drained by side ditches alone. If the road were built higher like a railroad embankment acrosa such low land and maie with a crown, it would be dry and bard. Sometimes a road passes through what is called a cut. This is a plaoe where the earth has been dug out so that tha road can go over a hill without being too ateep. The water which always flows quietly under tbe ground on hill aides is known as ground water. In road cuts such water sometimes makes the road very muddy, snu the road then needs what road uuilders call under drainage. A good kind of underdrainage is a trench to go along under the aide drain and about 3 feet deep and a foot and a half wide. In this trench a pipe ia laid near the bottom and covered with loose atones no bigger than an egg. When the trench is completely filled with loose stones tne gruund water, instead of .'"sking into the roadway, will stop among the atones and flow down through the pipe. 'lo keep a road smooth and crowned the neat method is to drag it with a road drag. A road drag is made easily with two halves of a log which baa been split. The log ahould. be about 6 or 8 inches in thickness and about 6 or 8 feet long. The two halves of the log are set 3 feet apart with the smooth face forward and upright. They are then fastened together with braces set In holea bored through tha log. A pair of horsts may be used to drag the road and are hitched to a chain fastened to the front half of the log. The road drag should move forward so that it slants across tha rosd in auch a way that a small amount of earth will elide past the smooth face of the log toward the center of the road, thua forming the crown. The edges of the logs ill smooth out the ruta. The best way to drag ia to begin at the aide ditch and go up one aide of the road, and then down the other. In the next trip tbe drag ahould be started a little nearer the center and the last trip over the read the drag may work close to the oenter itself. Small ridgea of earth will be thrown in the horse track and smeared by the round aide of tbe log smoothly over the road. The smearing of the earth by the drag is called "puddling" and It tenda to make the surface of tbe road smooth and water tight alter the sun comes out. Tbe road is always dragged after it bas rained and not when it la dry. A good strong pair of horses wltb a well built drag can drag about 3 or 4 miles of road in one day, and it ia the best way to maintain good roads. In every county some farmer along each 4 miles of road ahould own a drag and drag the road when it rains. He would always find the road In good condition when he goes to market. Owing to the fact that many rural schools were closed at the time when the prize maintenance essay waa an nounced by Director Logan Waller FOR THE FARMER A long suffering and overcharged publl'' Is now getting considerable chunk of Nnrlafnctlon out of tbe fai l that the exfireaa compniilin of the ?onntry lime got some competition In the nliape of the parcel pout and will henceforth have lo come acroae with 1 chen ht rules and more prompt aervlee If they xNct to hold their own In Hie ' parkin; carrying business. i Themiinll bird, thai eud their ln I ter lu the northern portion of the 1 United 8 tale ahould rerelv the en courKeiiif nt of n little grain wattered for tbeili. and wane plerex of tn-t or Other merit crp ahoulil Im put out ! where the aliow will not cover them A good deal of pleiituie during Hie win ter month may la- got by niitilmu the birds during their regular vlaila ii. thi'Mf feeding plaiea. Householders as wel) as Janitors ut public buildings, and what ia said re fer to the former even more than the latter, would confer a great service to those who gather aa their guests if they would take pains to see that their bouses are not overheated on aucb oc casions. This "stoking up" of furnace or stove is without doubt done with the best of Intentions, but it is at great risk to one's guests, who are vastly more In dauger of colds or pneumouis as a result of overheating than they are because of low temperature which may prevail ut the time of their ar rival. The temperature should not res Itter uhove 70 degrees F., and if It is iu. degrees there is far less danger than ir lr is 7 or SO degrees, as is too often 1 he ease The writer would not unduly luOu etice any yoiiug fellow from following a uiercuulile career, but be somehow has tbe Idea pretty well fixed tbat tbe tin 111 lad who gives up tbe chance to take up seteiitiQc farming on the old home plai-e for tbe easier work to be lotiud in a city clerkship, with an iuht or teu dollar salary. Is making a pretty koI sized mistake. True, he an keep bis hands softer and whiter i.i ldnd tbe counter, but be will earn mi a great deal above expenses. One young fellow who comes to the writer's mind decided a dozen or more years huo that staying on the farm or get ting on the farm was the better prop osition. Today be has title to more llmu 400 acres of land. Others who stayed In town and dillydallied bad the tame opportunity aa be, but are still alcddlng along on tbe bare ground. The situation above outlined is one that every young man wbo Is making Maun for the future may well take into ui-connt. Page of tbe Office of Public Roads, it has been decided to extend the limit for receiving the essays to October 15, 1913. In addition to tbe gold medal given as first prise, two silver medala will be given as second and third prixei. If a child who has submitted one essay previous to the issue of thia notice should oare to try again, be ia at liberty to do so, but be must be a pupil of a rural school.
