John Quinn, formerly a Lake County stockman, Friday arrived here from County Cork, Ireland where he has been the past three years. He Is in tereated in an estate in his home country the business of which will necessitate his return after a short time. The Alturas 1'laindealer reporta that a private letter from Fred H. Moore states that he Is un his way to this section with the largest and test com pany of players that ever visited this northern country. He'is now playing In Plumas and Sierra Counties, Calif ornia. Dr. J. I. Russell made a trip to Abert Lake last Friday night to attend Mrs. Andrew Hotchklss, who was threatened with an attack of pneu monia. The Doctor, accompanied ty W. P. Curtia as pilot, left here in his machine at 10 o'clock In the evening, returning at 4 in the morning. The last issue of the Merrill Record contains a salutatory over tbe signa ture of Albert E. Elder, who has be come publisher of that paper. This makes the fourth editor of the Record In that ''number of months. Here's hoping that Mr. Elder's term will outlive that of his predecessors. The Southern Pacific has established a new schedule of low freight ratee in the atate of Nevada which will benefit a wide area. They left Tuesday after noon via Dend by automobile, driven by their son, Paul. John Partin, a substantial farmer and stockman of tbe Summer Lake Valley, waa a business visitor in tbe county seat last week, having come down in his new Case car which he recently purchased, J. Thornton drug stores. J. A. Hoelling, recently of Los Angeles where he waa foreman of a garage, arrived last week to take a position in the Laaeview Garage. C, Thomas, an attorney of j Sacramento, writes the Examiner that ; he is contemplating locating in Lake ! view in the near future. He states i that he is admitted to the courts of j Oregon, and that he will at least make j a trip here soon. I f ourteen American soldiers were ! killed in the recent four daya of fight ing on Jolo Island in the Philippines when Ueneral Pershing's command finally subdued and disarmed the re bellious Moros, according to a report to tbe War Department. Andrew Morris, who operates a dsiry ranch in Camas Prairie, was in town Saturday with a good supply of his product which he readily disposed of to local patrona. Mr. Morria recently sold aix head of beef to Hayes & Grob, the reported price of which was 158 per head. ' Mr. and Mrs. R. N. Buehwaiter of Paialey were visitors in Lakeview Tuesday. Mr. Uuehwalter ia publisher of the Chewauoari Press and the Fort Rock Times, a new paper atarted in the northern part of the county. Ha reports good times in his section of the county. Modoo Republican: W. J. Bradley and family left Wednesday for Susan ville. Mr. Bradley has gone to Susan vllle to enter upon bis duties as man ager for the California and Oregon Telegraph Company at .that point. The many friends of the Bradley fam ily regret very much their departure. Material is being hauled on the ground for cement cross walks between tbe eorner of the First Na tional Bank and the corner of the court house and same bank and Bailey & j Masslngiil corner. This will make a decided improvement and will likely be followed by other crosa walks in the city. F.L. Williams of Sacramento who is well known here ia in Lakeview this week, having arrived Friday last. At last accounts she was reported improving. Tbe forty-first session ot the Amer ican Association of Pioneers was held last week in Portland. Nearly 1000 survivors of the dsys of '49 and Ore gon trsil blacers were in attendance. "Grandma" Foster went from Lake view to attend tbe convention. Mr. Vernon Dewa and Miss Edith Bennett were married last evening in Lakeview at the Green Garden Room ing UouBe. Tbe groom ia a son of Mr. Thos. G. Dews of A del, and the bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mra. C J. Bennett ot Warner Lake. Misa Nellie Brennan and mother, sis ter and mother ot Dan Brennan of this city, arrived here the first of the week from HolyyoKe, Mass. Miss Nellie will be employed aa stenographer in the Fre mont Forest Office and ber mother will visit for a few weeks In Lakeview. Three auto bandits last week held up and robbed an auto atage in Malheur County near Ontario. The bandits received $220 from a passenger and (17 from the driver. Last accounts state that the fugitives made a clean get away, making it far into Idaho with their machine. It is now a' crime to uae abusive, pro fane or obscene language upon or near a public highway. The last legislative assembly passed a bill which went into effect recently providing a maximum penalty of $50 tine for using violent language in any public place and on the roads and streets. Communion services will be held at the Presbyterian church In Masonic hull Sunday morning at 11 o'clock. Subject of sermon will be : "The New and tbe Old Covenant." In the even ing at 8 o'clock Rev. Crawford will deliver an address on, "Degrees of Liherty." Patriotic music will be rendered. Irl Coggburn, who has been serious ly ill of pneumonia the paat ten weeks, at the home of hia mother below Lake- view, waa able to come to town this week the first time since being out. He will spend several daya here visit ing with relatives. It ia reported that he has almost entirely recovered from the effects of bis illness. The report last Thursday that Zee Whitworth was lost in the mountains west of Summer Lake caused much intereat, tut word of hia appearance at Silver Lake a few davs afterward ended all anxiety. He atarted from the McCormack ranch at Summer Lake for Sican with a band of bucks. Ap parently be abandoned the sheep on top ot the Summer Lake rim and wandered through the mountains to Silver l.nke. C, Dodson accompanied by his half brother and wife, Mr. annd Mrs. R. J. Williams of Riley, Oregon, returned to Lakeview Tuesday evening from "silver City, New Mexico. Mr. Dod son will return in a few davs to New Mexico to await his trial which will be held in September. Mr. C. C. Chit wood, of Klamath Falla, has been appointed by tne State Forester as Supervising Warden for Klamath and and Lake counties. lie will have charge of all the state, county and private patrol work in the two counties and co-operate with For est Supervisors of the National Forests to the greatest possible extent. The city beautiful spirit was strong ly manifested last week during the three daya clean-up campaign inaugu rated by the town council in conjunc tion with tbe Ladies Civic Improve ment Club. Numerous loads ot trash and garbage were removed to the city dumping grounds and had it not been for the heavy rains which caused some mud in the streets they would present a very clean appearance. The first application for a contract with the state for the drainage of swamp lands under the provisions of the swamp lands drainage act passed by the last legislature was received by the state land board last week from C. B. McDonnell of Burns. The appli cation ia for a contract to drain Mal heur Lake, which covera approximate ly 46,000 acres. Tbe estimated cost of the project ia $245,124. County Clerk Payne has now received all tbe parephernalia for registering voters under the new registration law. A card index system is used in taking the namea of the voters and a cabinet will be sent by tbe County Clerk to an official registrar in eaoh precinct. Under the new law votera will not bave to register but once as long aa they do not tail to vote at each elec tion. George Barrington brought the first strawberries into market last Satur day.
