In this respect the tour strikingly resembled that made by John F. Stevens, who ! California highway commission, a I while reconnoitering for James J. Hill, ! of three members, appointed by traveled over central Oreeun in the i governor of the st:ite. disguise of a cowboy under the name of Samson. The result of his investi gations at that time led to the subse quent construction by Mr. Stevens for the Hill system of the Oregon Trunk line. That the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul will eventually extend its own line irto Portland is regarded as prac tically settled and while President arlmg's inspection of central Oregon at this time may have been for the ourpose of becoming personally ac quainted with conditions and prospects in central Oregon, it is also regarded very pronaoie mm ne is enienng pians , , no ,.ns(. mro ,min fifty fpot , r(1. for invasion of that immense territory; ,,; a mliny culverts an are ueeea. now tapped only by tbe bill and Harri-i sary to carry ofT nil surface water: a man rvstems. j travehi! way under ordinary conditions The Chicago, Milwaukee & SI. At various times it baa ben rumored that the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul has figured on the purchase of the Oregon Water Power division of the Portland Kailway, Light & Power company, including the line to Trout dale and hMacada over which it would find easy access to the city and excel lent terminal facilities on the east side of the Willamette, south of the Haw thorne bridge. The Estacada line, too, would give it entrance into central Oregon if extended, for preliminary surveys t-how that an extension from Casadero into Warm Springs Indian reservation could be effected through a very favorable pass at a comparative ly small coat. Such a project has Luen pronounced very feasible by a numuer ot expert railroad builders and it is said this course would he pursued should the property be acquired by the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul sybtim. The Hind Bulletin adds to the above that the party of railroad men referred to by the Journal stopped one day in Bend and came on to Paisley at which place they let it be understood thev were goirg in search of land.
