MEAT WAR CAUSES DECLINE IN PRICES Cmtlo men throughout Oregon are vitally intertilled big meat war which li now in progress in Seattle. Ona of tha big packing houaea of the city In troduced retail marietta and tegan cutting the price of meat believing that by 10 doing they could not only re duce the cost of living but at tha aame time materially Increase the consump tion. Independent butchere tried to maae the paoaing houie eut out Ita re tail marketa ; the packing bouae refuaed with the reault that the meat war be gan. On account of Ue high price of beef In the eastern marketa laat Hum mer and Fall there haa been created in the northwest a acarolty of cattle which would have ordinarily come to the western market went eaat There are not enough cattle to go around. Tne prediction la made that within a few month I ,iil retailers will be compelled to pay a far bigger price for their cat tie than ware paid by the eastern deal- era a few montba ago. Certainly the meat war which 11 now on in Seattle haa reduced the cost of living. Meat which a few weeka ago waa selling for twenty and twenty-five centa pound can now be bad for ten, fifteen and twenty centa. Never in the history of the city has so much meat been sold aa during the paat two weeka. There la no indication that tbe war will aoon end, on te contrary there ia every in dication that it will continue for alx months.
