The man who docs not know theso

j only excuse is that he ilocs not know
; how to find out these things. For this
reason the department of agronomy has
prepared printed dircctic-mi for soil sam
pling at the Oregon Agricultural Col
lege, and any farmer who will send
samples, taken according to these di
rections, to Prof. H. O. Scudder, soil
specialist of the experiment station,
will receive a report containing infor
mation of vital Importance to his farm.
Take samples from an open Held and
avoid paths, gopher ho'cs, etc., from
which modified and not typical samples
are likely to lie oil tamed." says Pruf.

This represents the surface soil.
"In the same manner get an average

and if hard pan or any other peculanty

state at what average depth it occurs
and send a email sample.
"Send a letter by mail with as com-i

the name ot the nearest town, the
probable selling price of the land. The
elevation ahove the nearest river, the
direction and grade of slopes. Tell how
long it has been cropped and what has
been raised on the land, wnat the yields
were and whether fertilizers have been
applied on the land. If there are any
peculiarities which mHy have a bearing
on the agricultural (pjaliiies of the soil
they should be mentioned in the letter.
The samples should be expressed, pre
