TiiEwoiiu'teir III Ull If) MISNOMER Pome ten years ago a Government map maker, with good Intentions but little sense, wrote the word "desert" across a goodly portion of Central Oregon. Gradually we have brgun to see that "deert" ern a' cognition of the fact that it Is not desert at all nut a flist class agricultursl tsrritory. Rtcently another "desert" la losing its o iious title. We refer to the so-called, and miscalled "high desert." I lever a word was misused, It is tat word "desert. The country in question is proving itself an admirstle success. Crops are being raised, and without irrigation. Wells are being obtained. Now, successful dry farming is not to be had in a "desert" nor are wells tbe order of the day. Furtnermore, folks lark East, where our colonists came from remember, draw a distressing mental picture of sun-baked, sandy waste, totally devoid of vegetation, whenever the word "deaert"' ia men tioned. So let'a all "cut out" tbat word "desert " Its tbe wrong word. It helps no one. Tbe above from the editorial columns ot the Bend Bulletin bits the Exam iner's sentiments in regsrd to the "desert" situation. It is misleading to apply the term desert to a scope of country capable of producing vegeta tion, wbicb is being demonstrated, where ever cultivation of the coil Is tried. There are some spots on this eo-called desert tbat are, of course, not adapted to farming, tbe same as in any mountsinous country, but tbe tillable lands tb-t intersect tbat section of Ore gon remove all possibilities of it being s barren desert. Tbere are no portions of Oregon'a desert but what is covered with a growth of sagebrush, and tbat is tbe best evidence of tbe toils fer tility. ' New Modoc War History A new Modoc Indian war story is to soon be made into book form, if tbe plans of Jeff C. Riddle, one of tbe pio neers of this struggle in tbe Lavs Beds, country between the United States soldiers and Modocs in tbe esrly 70's, ssys tbe Klamath Northwestern. This history, according ti D. Moses, who is gathering pbotos tor the publi cation, is to be produced either tbts winter or next soring. It is to be writ ten from tbe Indisn version of tbe fa mous Mod oo War, something tbat will be new in thia line of hiBtory. Several histories bsve been produced dealing with this famous struggle in tbe Klamath country, but they were wr t ten from tbe white man's version and in many respects deal very lightly with the true inside of tbe struggle to wrest tbls country from tbe Redmen. A Realistic Drama Last night I dreamt I went to hea ven. Peter was good nstored and seemed very glad to see me. "Hello, corarada, come right in," said he. 1 bad been in but a short time when I noticed a laree blackboard on tbe other end of the room where two men were busy writing. A longer look told me they were President Taft and Prof. Wilson and tbe way tbey were writing W88 a caution. I Baked Peter what tbey were doing aud ne said : "Oh, all those Republi cans and Democrata must write alt their sins on tbat board before tbey can remain here and if they tail as tbey usually do, tbey are promptly kicked out." Just then a man went by us on a run and I'll be darned if it wasn't Teddy, the Terror. "Ay there, Ted" I shouted: "is your hat in here also?" He holleered oack : "Dont" botner me now, for I am after more chalk."
