And not only that but the tine crops of grains, grasses fruits, etc.. now growing there folly demonstrate what may be expected when every thing in that part ot the valley is brought into a state of cultivation. Only a vey small part of Goose Lake Valley ha ever been touched by a plow, but when the Ian 1 is cultivated, wfiich it will tie n a very few years, then there will be sui'h a change that even the oldet innabiiniit dues not at present believe podsliile. There is no douht but that with cultivation the land becomes warmt r sr.tl the occasion al trH we now experience will soon be ur Kno at. The deatn of Hon Cna. B. Merrick, )ostma-ter of Portland, early yester day mornir g, cast a gloom over the town, ard left its impression on the Central Oregon Development League convention. Expressions of sorrow were heard on all sides, and the state ment triat in the midst of life we are in death was brought forcibly to mind. During the two days that he was in Lake iew Mr. Merrick added much to the pleasures of those who met ti n and with whom he fraternized. He was of a jovial nature and a man whom it waa pleasure to know. While not question ing the acta of an All-wise frovidence, yet it almost seems an injustice that tie should be removed at this time just when he was in the prime of life. l eace be with him.
