MUTT AND JEFF ARE OREGONIANS Mutt's Prototype is Tom Stevens, Jeff's Was Scotty Furfireson People who have enjoyed many a laugh over the funny and clever car toons of Mutt and Jeff will be sur prised to lesrn tbst tbe original Mutt is a native Douglas county man and that of Jeff a former livery man of Burns, Or. W. W. Cardwell, tbe well known Roseburg attorney, impsrts this interesting Information. The proto type of Mutt is Tom Stevens, who wss born at Looking Glass, and the crea tion of Jeff wss inspired by the ap pearance of "Scotty" Ferguson, the companion of Stevens. Stevens, who now lives st Burns, is about 6 feet 4 inches tall snd very larky. Ferguson died at Emeryville, Cal., sbout a year ago. He was a Scotchman, nnt over five feet high, with a bull dog fsce, as Csrdwell de scribes bim, snd with whiskers just as they are pictures in Jeff cartoons. Stevens is a professional gambler, and many of the old timers around here pronounce bim tbe smoothest poker player that ever est at a card table in these parts. About 20 yeara ago be was sent to tbe stat. penitentiary for short term for larceny. The rest of the story is told by Attorney Csrdwell thus: "Alter Stevens was released from the penitentisry be drifted out tq Burns and fell in with Ferguson, who waa conducting a .livery stable which he established with savings of $8000 or $10,000 from wages earned in the employ of old Pete French, a heavy land owner in tbat locality in those dsys. Stevens and Ferguson became fast friends and ultimately business partners tbat is, Stevens furnished the ideas and Ferguson the money. One day they decided to go to Emery ville, Cel., where tbe race horse gsme wss then in the neydey of its exis tence. They invested in several gooa nags and for a time fortune smiled on them. But the inevitable happened. Their horses began to come under the wire too late and their money gradually left them. It wan during this period of reverse that the idea of tbe characters of Mutt and Jeff was born in the mind of 'Bud' Fisher, the Exaimner cartoonist. When a Stevens Ferguson horse lost a race, the two men would Immediately tarn on each other with volley of curse laden words' of blama within plain aarabot of tha amoaed spectator. Tha sight of tnis III aa sorted pair so frequently en gaged In axchsngs of Invective be came th subject of bomoroo com ment among the sporting fraternity and Cartoonist Fisber bit apofl the plan to pot them; In picturedom on tha (porting supplement of tne Exam iner. It mad bfg bit right from tba start, and it ultimately put Fisber In the front rank of American' laagb makers. "Stevens finally drifted back to Bum when the California legislature pot a atop to tba racing game. Tba shock wss too much for Scotty, how ever, and three months later be cashed in' for the last time. News of the Week (High Grade News) Camp High Grade is now "Tbe Reel Old Thing." M.
