MINERS MEETING
ATM CREEK
Addresses Made By N.-C-O.
Officials and Othor
Active People
(HlKh Grade News)
On Tuesday evening Wendt'a Opera
Hour wss crowded by miner from
tha hill, rancher from the farm and
buslnea men of the district.
Tha meeting wa called to discurs
tha local situation genemlly, and to
tender to Mr. T. P. Dunnaway, Gen
eral Manager of the N.-C.-O. Railway
and Mr. Chatlea E, Miller, Genetal
Publicity Agent of that line, a cordial
welcome.
Judge O. C Nelson waa made 'chair
man of the meeting and distinguished
himself by the manner in which he
performed that function.
Capt K. L. Evana waa the first
speaker Introduced. He apoka at
length upon the injury inflicted upon
the camp by the naming of prohibitory
pricea and terms for properties to In
vestor. He made an abl and telling
speech.
Mr Edward Keller wss called to the
platform and excused himself from
making a speech.
Mr. T. F. Dunnaway was then in
troduced. He treated tha audience to
a plain business, common aense talk
on the part his line is playing in the
development of one of the richest sec
tions of the globe. He guaranteed a
very low freight rat on ores from
Camp High Grade, when regular ship
ment begin. Mr. Dunnaway'a talk
was cordially received and when be re
signed the floor wa roundly applauded.
Editor Card of tb New wa then
called to the platform and briefly ex
pounded the cause of High Grade and
Sunset Valley.
The real speech of the evening wa
made by Chaa. E. Milller, who wa
then called upon t address the gather
ing. Hi addresa waa masterful,
pointed, timely, logical, and eloquent.
, He proclaimed for truth and conserva
tism in statement regarding the res
trict. He criticised the false reports,
exaggerated figures, ana sensstlonsl
statement relative to tb camp by the
wind ittmmer, wild ratter and de
praved press. He recalled instances
of wilful a id self evidently false
stories aa to the fabuloua weidth of
certain properties in the district, when
In many instancea the parties who
made the atatementa had never oeen in
the district and in other they really
owned nothing here.
Yellow Mountain Active
In the Yellow Mountain part ot
the district mine owner and lessors
are turning loose and tearing into bit
all the formations. The Consolidated,
Alturas, Shasta View, Mountain
Sheep, Taroarrac, Mountain View,
Colorado, Josephine and North S'ar
are all working. Other minea and
lessors are getting in their supplies
and other wise preparing for tb great
dig for yellow metal.
At the Consolidated wblcb beads the
list, twelve men are working getting
the mine and mill in readiness, and
when thia is accomplished more men
will be put on and work begun in ear
nest. The ores of the Consolidated,
Mountain Sheep, and Mountain View,
will be treated in the four stamp mill.
As there is enough ore in sight in any
one of the mines mentioned the mill
will have no time for custom work.
Jack Bell, has been thoroughly
sampling the property has submitted
bis report which seems to be favorable
to the company, and they are laying
on with a vim to get out the ore.
The Guyot lease on the North Star is
st present in the throes of development
work, and proving up on the vein mat
ter. The North Star is just bellow the
Discovery property on Discovery Hill
and promise to cut the Discovery
vein. A custom mill is located one
iand one balf miles from the North
Star and Jthis will undoubtedly start
when sufficient ore has been blocked.
Work has been started on the Jose
phine and Tamarrao. Both of these
mine show good value - but are in
need of development work. Ore on
the Josephine is free milling and car
ries about two ounces. The Tamarrac,
the sale of which is being considered
to the Meachum people of San Fran
cisco, has good ores.
Since word has been received that
the Western Pacific has started into
Higb Grade, the leasers are anxious to
get as much as possible of their ore
sacked and on the dump. San Fran
cisco can then be reached wtih less
expense and without transfer as here
after. The southern part of the District is
doing nicely and as in the rest of the
District thing maybe sad to be on
the go.

WESTERN PACIFIC
PLANSEXTENSION
Railroad Company Will
Build an Extension From
Gerlacht Nevada
(High Grade News)
Csrlach, Nev., July 20. 1012. Ae-
tul work on tha construction of the
railroad from thia point to Fort Bid-
well and possibly on to High Urad
waa begun yesterday under tha direc
tion of the Western I'aciflo railway
company and bids fair to be cnmplatnd
by the first of the year.
A large gang ot grader haa been
put in operation with tem shovel and
team Jrora a point a short distance
west from her and from tho speed
with which dirt is being thrown there
is little doubt that the company will
be able to fulfill It promise by the
time specified.
A survey corps Is a few miles in ad
vance of the grading outfit and the en
gineer In charge is authority for the
statement that the time will b in op
erstion by th spring of l.S3.
This rapid schedule on the part of
the Western Facitlo is an unequivocal
indication of thepirpose of the oom
pany to push work steadily and rapidly
regardless of temporary local condi
tions. The tonnsg from High Grade minea
and the Surprise Valley la said to be
far in excess of the amount necessary
to make the project financially remun
erative, ince the output of the mines,
will be sufficient in themselves to pay
the operating expenses of the line,
while tr unusual richness of the Sur
prise Valley will be, In common par
lance, "clear velvet" on thi project.
A San Francisco brokerage firm has
already spoken for an acreage of from
five thousand to twenty thousand acres
in the .Surprise and Warner valley
with the Idea of establishing a large
colonization project, locations on
whicn bave already been spoken fur
from all part of the country.
Keports from the grading esmp a
few miles west of here are to the
effect that one hundred and fifty tons
of dirt are being moved every shift,
and since 'he grsde from Uerlach to
Fort Bidwell will not exceed fiv per
cent at any point and the average
grade will be in conformity with the
Western Pacific's uniform grade of on
per cent throughout the entire route, it
is generally conceeded by railroad
authorities who are "in the know"
that ibe same average will be main
tained throughout the new line.
With the discovery of bonanxa ore In
tbe Yellow Jacket, which shows values
running from one hundred to twenty
thousand dollars a ton and a vein at
least twelve feet wide, the Sunshine
shipping 11200 ore and tbe Gold Shore,
and adjoining property, revealing ore
from S40 co S60 per ton on the aurface,
there is every assurance (that the
mineral and agricultural resources of
Modoc eounty will be brought to the
front in a manner which will direct the
attention of the civilized world to this
part of the glob".
It Is understood that an asrent of the
railroad company has been in Fort
Bidwell lor the past few daya looking
over the prospect for a terminu and
that a deal is near the closing point
through the Modoc Mining and Realty
Exchange for a tract twenty acres in
extent which may be used for tbe par
poses of tbe company, such as round
house, shops and other necessities.
