FREE BACTERIA
FOR THE FARMER
Free bacteria for the raising of leg
uminous croos. such as alfalfa, peas,
beans, and clovers, will be furnished
to the farmers of Oregon upon reauest
bv the department of racteriologv at
the Oregon Agricultural college. The
experiment station experts have been
busv preparing this material tor the
Inoculation of soil for some time, and
will send full directions for its use with
each culture. Those desiring the ma
terial should send their rrouests at
least two weeks In advance of the time
tbey wish to use it. stating what leg
uminous cruDS thev desire to raise,
snd how much land thev Intend to
plant.
Anv one who has examined the roots
of a tbriftv plant of thia sort of crop
know that there are found on the roots
small lumps. known as nodules.
Scientific study has shown these to be
caused by bacteria infecting the roots,
and tbst unless these are present, a
good stand will not be obtained, show
ing that the bacteria are necessary to
the full growth of the plant. If the
soil does not contain the bacteria, a
good catch of the crop may not be ex
pected. Bv using these cultures the
proper bacteria may be introduced into
the soil. Where a croo has never been
grown on a piece of land, as where
alfalfa is being introduced, or when
the stand obtained has not been satis
factory and it Is anown that the lack
was not that of sufficient lime, such
cultures can be used with good effect.
They will not. however, correct lime
deficiency, nor will the bacteria thrive
in acid soil. For this reason, lime
should be applied where needed before
the culture is used.
dishonest real estat men are held re
sponsible for th misleading advertis
ing which hua brought thousands of
people from the eastern states only ta
find their dreams blssted.
These psoers sre only chance in
stances. Every newspaper in the East
snd the Middle West will feature this
utterly false and misleading story,
because It will be conaidered good
"copv." Oregon's opportunities are
drawing people in thousands from less
favored regions, and arguments against
Oregon however false thev may be
are valuable.
If th real worklngmen of the state
were behind tbia muguidsd movement
the situation would be bard to under
stand. When it la known that it is the
work of a few demagogic leaders who
are olaving for their own personal ends,
the truth becomes apparent.
Oregon will survive this unwsrranted
and cowardly attack upon ber good
name. Oregon offeis too bright a fu
ture to the man who ia willing to work
to suffer long from those who seek
merely to discourage the worker.

0. A. COLLEGE TO

"Agriculture needs men for leader

activity," ssid Dr. Jsmes Withvcombe.
addresRsing the Agricultural Club at
O. A. C. "and it ia expected that thia
college shall do its share In auoplving
this clsss ot men for the farms of Ore
gon. "The field for leadership is brosd and
open. We need men not onlv Dosseeaed

but men with the ability to organise.
tu prevent economic wastes. The
mstter of croo distribution presents
one of the greatest agricultural prob
lems of todsv. Note the waste annually
occurring in our state, it is estimated
that the farms of Oregon produced
last vesr commodities approximately
valued at $14.000.000. Fullv half of
thia found its wsv to the channels of
trade, and fifty per cent of this was
consumed in the cost of distribution.
In other words, it costs the farmers
$31,000,000 to msrkct $162,000,000
worth of produce. This tremendous
marginal difference between what the
oroducer pavs must be reduced. Con
servation, intelligent agricultural or
ganizations are the solution of the
problem."

Sea Mowing: Machine
The first sea mowing machine has
recently been launched at San Diego,
California, for the purpose of cutting
the millions of tons of kelo and sea
weed that grow along the coast.
A gasoline launch has been fitted
with a horizontal jack shaft revolving
at right angles to the keel. Two ver
tical shafts are fitted with four foot
blades that revolve at high speed 10
feet below the surface. The mowed
kelo floats ashore, ia taken out and
dried and later is hauled to a factory
to be converted into fertilizer. Ex.
