Davlea has had a mottled career. Coming from his na tive statt of Maine bv wav of the Isth mus. some thirty odd vears age. he liv ed for years in Nevada : thence migrat ing to Drews valley, not far from Lakeview. where he invested in a herd of sheeo and became a shepherd, mak ing a little money out of the venture. Selling his herd when sheeo were low in the market, he came to Dairv 11 to 12 vears ago. he bought out a stock of merchandise, and began "keeping store." and was Dostreaater for vears. Liberal to a fault, and careless in keep ing his accounts, be hsd his up and downa till some four vesr ago he was forced into bankruD'ov bv his creditors. Still having some credit, be built an other structure and attempted to re coup his fallen fortune bv telling his merchandise, but with no cash in band wholesale dealers refused to sell goods to him. he lost the postofflce and went adrift herding aheeo for Rex Bord for a year, and then went to work for Dave Shook. Although "down and out." in a financial sense, his liksble auslities have endesred him to manv who have known and dealt with him in the years agone. In Lake countv where he was well known everv one bas a kindlv word for "Ike." and here he retains the sctive friendship Of nearly all of those who were his former customers. He is bright and wittv in speech, and nas auite a faculty of making rhvmes. High in the ranka of Free Masonrv. his chief delight is found in attending Masonic functions, wearing his "regi mentals" with becoming pride. Al tbough'a failure in a business sense, who is there to ssv that hv has done no good in the world? Was it not a I'hiirisee who praved "Lord. 1 thank thee that 1 am better than that poor Publican?" , HARNEY COUNTY HAVING TROUBLE Portland Telegram: Ilurns. the lead ing town of ilarnev County, In suffer, ins. from a severe caie of fright, de clares Joe Marian, a resident of the countv. "Should the railway not build to Rums, the residents of that town fear thev will lose the countv seat." de clares Mr. Mahan. "and to prevent such a change the commissioners, working solely for the interest of Ilurns. have Issued an extra tax lew for a large structure to be used aa a courthouse and for gereral countv oftlces. This is undertaken when we hsve no need of a now structure, the old courthouse being ample for Ilarnev County tor some time to come."
