but none that can equal that of the new
Southern 1'acifio Company bridge.

Alturas New Kra : The unfortunate
man who lost his life in the fire which
destroyed the Riverside Hotel on the
4th inst.. has an uncle in Milocter.

at the time of the fire, as he was un

formerly did a large business in Lon
don as a broker. He lost everything in
London by misfortune, and began to ,

to recuperate his finances, and has
been doing well. He had planned to
I make a visit to his uncle in the near
future. Last year he had a narrow
escape from being burned uo in the
Alturas Hotel when it was destroyed.
Now an Eastern Ministerial associa
tion favors a movement to extend the
sane observation of holidays from
Fourth of July to Christmas. The ap
peal is to avoid extravagance in Chriat
mas buying : to make the holiday re
memberance more a matter of affection
and of the real manifestation of that,
regard and respect which friends owe
to each other, rather than an ostenta
tious display of false generosity, (iive

PLEASING TO ALL

suited in the election of democratic
governors in Massachusetts. Kentucky
Mini Mississippi, a republican governor
in Ithode Island, a republican assembly
in New York, which will challenge he
continuance of Coventor Dix'a policies,
a New Jersey legislature with major
ities nut in accord with Governor Wood
row Wilson of that state, with results
of the state elections in Maryland and
New Mexico still in doubt.
In Massachusetts. Governor r'ana.
democrat, was elected bv a reduced
Plurality of about 8.000 over Iiuis
Frothingham. republican. The contest
was unexpectedly close and early re
turns indicated Governor Foss' defeat.
The republican candidate for Lieuten
ant Governor was elected I y seven
th'usand majority and the other re
publican stato candidates are elected.
In Rhode Island. Governor 1'orthier.
republican, is re-elected over I,ouia
C. W Waterman, democrat, by a grcat

chief surprises of the election, revers
ing the Present democratic majority
