realizes that she or he wants to read
j the rest of the advertisement for the
sake ot what is said in it.
I There are several wavs of attracting
! attention. One is bv means of a strik-
ing headline in bold type, another mav
: be planned ov the use of plentv of
white space in and around the ad. and
1 one more means is the use of some
! freak arrangement of the tvoe matter.
Attention mav also be got bv a com
1 bination of all of these ways. But
j there is still another wav of attracting
attention that beats them all.
I It has been found in small towns
and especially in dealing with goods
that sell mostly to women, that a good
illustration is the best means, no, onlv
to attract attention, but to hold it
and create interest in ye rest of the
advertisement. The illustration should
have human Interest and action should
as far as possible enter into it bv
means of a figure of a man 'or woman
performing something or shown as
' having done something, the result of
the "something" having been done,
For a long time it was' thought that
comic pictures were the best means of
attracting attention and manv of the
readers of these lines are still of the
j same opinion. While this mavbe so
i to a verv limited extent, it has been
found that they do not create that de
sire to read the rest of the advertise
ment that is necessary to its success.
AIbo because thev are comic thev
cause laughter, which means that the
quiuov iiiiii a. , sv k;iiu s j tsv v. v m,iii ass u
tion of the goods and even to the advertise-
himself. When an advertise
ment is laughed at it seldom carries
conviction of the minds of possible
customers. A well drawn picture with
a touch of humanity in it is, therefore,
the best means of attracting attention
to an ordinary retail advertisement.
The illustration should be well
drawn. A badlv drawn or sillv picture
reflects on the goods and the store.
It is better to do without the illustra
tion altogether than to have a bad one.
j And the picture shuld not only be well
drawn, but tt should blend well with
the rest of the advertisement. While it
attracts attention, it should also di
rect the mind to the other portion of
the advertisement that creates interest
and brings'conviction. Pictures of the
"reason whv" kind in advertising are
the latest evolution in retail publicity.
Thev have been used for a long time
in successful national advertising. A
glance at the Saturday Evening Post
or any of the good magazines will show
this and it will also prove another
thing that comic pictures or caricatures
are not uusually employed by those big
advertisers to exploit their goods.
Having settled in vour mind that
good illustrations are the best and
surest means of attracting attention
to what you have to 'sell through vour
i newspaper, you will naturally go on
the hunt for those pictures. You mav
hnd considerable difficulty in getting
good illustrations locally and when you
do. vou will probably find the price to
be away above what you can afford to
pav. And to use a bad picture will lie
worse than no advertisement. What
already accomplished it for thousands
of other merchants in the same Posi
tion as vou are ;?

J. F. Cutler, of the Fort Bidwell
Booster's Club, and manager of the
Modoc mines company, is in the citv

with him some attractive pieces of ore
from the Fort Bidwell district, as well
as an assay report that more than con

Journal a short lime ago regarding the
new sensational strike on the Sunshine
At that time the statement was made
that the eight-foot shaft had encoun

eight-inch vein, for a distance of
about six feet, was taken and assayed,
the result showing 131.8 ounces sold

shown being $2GTj8.50.
Mr. Cutler has the samples on dis
