Klamath Herald ; Early accounts of
the accident which Cost E. E. Dei sen- j

was with the duo of trainers when
thev met their end. not only aaw the 1
accident at a abort distance, but after-!

The traredv occured at 9 3J0 o'clock
Sunday morninir. The three men bad
bad break fasL and were starting out
on their horses to do some work when
a race down the lane was beirun be
when the two afterwards killed. Thev
were soon well ahead of Doten. and
did not know that a woven wire fence
had been placed across the end of the
lane. Their horses were tame, but one
man was tryinsr to aneed oast the
other, and turned to call to him in ex
altation as he came alongside. Tnus
the attention of both was distracted
for a time from ahead, where tbe
fatal fence stretched across the road.
The first horse, as soon as he saw
the fence, tried to stoo by "Dlsntine"
all fours, but slid into the fence at
terrific SDeed. tearing six or eight
fenceooaU out of the ground and
throwing his rider a great distance.
Tbe second horse was triptxid by tbe
broken fence, and this caused bis rider
to meet a like fate. Both men were
thrown so as to land on their heads,
and the imnact was much as though
thev had been knocked senseless bv
sand bags, there being no fracture of
the skull of either victim, but con
cussion of the orian resulted instantly
to both men from tbe awful collision
A great cloud of dust obscured tbe
view of the collision from Doten. who
was behind. When he came orxm the
havoc wrought by the smash he was
astounded. HelD waa secured and
the injured men removed to the ranch
house near bv. from which George
Manning, brother of Attorney Horace
M. Manning of this citv. had a ohone
message sent to the lawyer for medical
assistance.
Dr. (jeorge H. Merrvman went from
this city to attend the injured men. as
did also Mrs. J. E. Tavlor. a nurse.
Dr. Campbell, who lives near the
ranch which is five miles from Mount
Hebron, waa also called in on the case,
as were two other physicians, but all
the skill offered -'availed nothing, and
the men never regained consciousness.

mother of Williams Uvea at Bums,
about ISO miles from the Prsther ranch,
too fsr away to be reached in time.
Williams, aged 27 years, was a part
ner of Geo. Manning, and he and
Deisenorln. aged 22 veara. were both
expert horse breakers.' Thev were
both steady, sober young men.
A strange feature of the accident ia
that neither horse was materially in
jured bv the accident. Marks on tbe
saddle of one of tha horses and a gash
in ita body showed that It probably
ianded on its back. But when Doten
got uo to the fence tbe horses were
up and running around.
Local oeoDle have had considerable
occasion for eomolaint In the past over
tbe way in which freight shipments
were being held at Alturas. after being
unloaded from the N.-C.-O. Thla
matter will cause no trouble fit th
future, as the goods are now being
shiooed aa far north as Davis Creek,
and the freighter have a correspond
ingly shorter distance to haul and are
in a position to makt more trip and
prevent a congestion of freight at the
warehouse.
